Summary
Listen, Buck didn’t entirely expect to be closing the Nashville trip by yelling at his best friend to stab him with a fork in a random New Mexico diner, but here he is.
Yelling at his best friend to stab him with a fork.
“Put me out of my misery. Kill me Eddie! Kill me now! Why not!” The rest of the diner had fallen into a much more hushed chatter by this point, only the occasional scrape of cutlery against a plate or the door swinging open to signal yet another person’s exit to be heard.
Or,
What if Buck and Eddie weren't interrupted in the diner, and they talk about what Buck really meant by "put me out of my misery"?

Summary
“He doesn’t sleep.” The sentence ripped out of Buck before he could stop it. Tears threatened to spill as he brought his hand up, waving it around like it could solve all his problems. Admitting to his failure made him feel like a monster. “We’ve tried melatonin, tea, extra bedtime stories, exercising— Nothing works. Nothing works and Eddie, I am so fucking tired.”
Pathetic. He was pathetic. Almost every new parent went through a phase where their kid barely slept. Everyone else could handle it, including Maddie and Chim, so why couldn’t he? How did they push through feeling so beyond sick, that left and right and up and down all looked the same?
Earlier, he swore he saw the version of Daniel he saw in his coma dream lurking behind him. Did they see ghosts too?
A soft thumb ran over his cheek. Buck couldn’t stop himself from leaning into it.
“Baby,” Eddie whispered, soft and oh-so-concerned. In no universe did Buck deserve him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
—
Or the one where Theo has kept Buck awake for four days straight, and Eddie won't let him fall any further.

Summary
“Eddie was amazing, of course,” Buck replies, balling his hand into a fist. “He offered to talk about it… but I’m not there yet.” A tear runs down his cheek, but Buck is barely aware of it. “I don’t… I think, um, I’m getting worse.”
Dr. Copeland frowns. “How do you mean, Buck?”
“I…” Buck trails off, staring at the wall behind Dr. Copeland’s head. “I’m not sure if I was made for… this. Sometimes… I just think it might be better if I… disappear or something. I just feel… not numb… just… nothing. I don’t feel anything. There’s brief emotions here and there. They pop up, flash suddenly, a spark of anger, a touch of joy or laughter. And, then they’re just…” Buck gestures vaguely, “gone, just like that. It’s like… on the surface, I feel the emotions, but inside my heart, it’s full of… nothingness. It’s just a void. So, even when I feel something… it doesn’t change that void, it doesn’t fill it. Nothing can fill it.”

Summary
The pills are the first thing to catch his eye, a mixture of orange ovals, green capsules, and white circles. They scatter the entryway to the kitchen, a harrowing indication of what there is to find. He gulps harshly, refusing to believe the worst until there is not more denying it, stepping forward cautiously.
“Buck?” He calls out again, heart hammering as he prays that there’s another explanation for this. Hoping Buck is just out in the garden, or baking with noise cancelling headphones on, simply unaware that the medication Chris hadn’t even known he was on is now decorating the the kitchen floor.

Summary
Now, at three in the morning, Buck felt like an accordion, bent at frequent intervals and sharp angles and he found himself questioning every memory he had of his early twenties. Had he really fit comfortably in the back seat once upon a time? Or had it always been cold and lonely and uncomfortable and those rougher edges of his memories were just sanded down by time and distance?
It was uncomfortable now. It was embarrassing now. Buck shivered, wrapping his arms around his bare arms and trying to scrunch down further against the seats. Away from view.
Early on in their friendship, Eddie finds Buck sleeping in the Jeep and takes him home.

Summary
Fuck, Eddie wants to scream. But all he can do is lie there—rigid as a fucking pole—while Buck hums dreamily right up against his pulse point.
Does Buck want to feel his pulse flatline?
“What are you doing?” Eddie whispers minutes later, paralysed. His mouth is so, so dry, his voice comes out hoarse.
He feels cracked open, exposed, vulnerable.
“I think those brownies were funny,” Buck slurs, breath growing inexplicably hot. “But… I’m not laughing—I’m just trying not to kiss you.”
Or; Dixie kisses Buck at the bar and then gives him brownies. Innocently, Buck shares them with Eddie. They get high. Eddie tries not to die.

Summary
“Dad says you’re not feeling good,” Christopher said from beside him on the couch, causing a flash of panic as he’d almost forgotten he was there.
The air cut his throat when he cleared it. He frowned, then tried for a smile as he glanced at him. “Uh, yeah, I guess not, but getting to see you is helping.”
Christopher had a little scrunch to his nose, making his glasses shift. “Are you sick?”
The question felt too big in his head as it bounced around, and his mind wandered back to the fire and Bobby.
His teeth dug into his lip, scraping. They were cracked and rough, and he bit at the skin of his bottom one, catching an edge and peeling it a bit. It seemed like a thing he should be able to feel, but he couldn’t.
Bobby was the one in the hospital, the person they should be worrying about, not him.
--or--
Bobby gets hurt, and Buck can't cope, so he checks out, going numb, but Eddie, Chris, and a flame pull him back. Two of those things were healthy, and one was not.

Summary
The weight of fingers pressing down on his tongue makes him writhe under the hold of Buck’s thighs. He’s pinned in place, the jerk of his hips only just managing to brush the underside of his aching cock against the soft skin of Buck’s belly where he’s leaning over him.
The barely-there touch against his burning skin sends a thrill through him, the hint of friction just a tease and overwhelming all the same, and he hollows his cheeks around Buck’s fingers with a groan.
It’s not enough, he needs more, he wants Buck to push in deeper, for him to let Eddie stretch his lips around his hand and wrist and arm and swallow him whole. As if sensing his frustration, Buck presses his fingers down a little bit more, and Eddie chokes with a cough, drool dripping down the corner of his mouth.
Eddie has an oral fixation, and Buck has an idea.

Summary
“You don’t have to,” Buck says quickly. “You could just leave it. Don’t look.”
Eddie glances up at him, and they both know without saying it that he isn’t going to let this go.
There’s no way he can look away now, not after seeing the way Buck reacted.
“Or maybe just not now,” Buck says softly, stepping closer, his hand settling gently over the screen like he can shield Eddie from what’s on it. “Maybe leave it for now. You’re not… Eddie, you’re not doing well right now. I’ve been so worried about you and this—” his voice catches, “—you… Eddie, please don’t. Just leave it.”
It stings to hear the worry out loud, even if he knew it was there.
He wants to do what Buck says, he wants to trust his friend and give him what he’s asking.
Buck never asks for anything.
Eddie moves Buck’s hand aside gently, giving it a brief squeeze. “Can’t do that, Buck.”
Or; After Christopher leaves for El Paso, Buck decides that he and Eddie should trace their family trees to keep Eddie’s mind occupied elsewhere. The results lead Eddie to face a family secret.

“Buck?”
Buck sucks in a labored breath and turns back to Eddie with widened eyes.
“Woah, hey, what’s wrong?” Eddie asks. He straightens up, only for Buck to sink to the ground — his knees too wobbly to keep him upright for a moment longer.
“I can’t be him again,” Buck says, breathlessly. “I can’t be Derrek.”
OR: Buck and Eddie are trapped in an elevator. This brings up some things for Buck.

Summary
“Eddie!”
“What?!” Eddie barks, half-amused, half-exasperated. “Buck, it’s fine. We’re fine. Nothing happened, and even if it did, who cares? All three of them had it coming.”
“Of course they did!” Buck whirls back around, jaw set, eyes burning. “Those kinds of guys will always have it coming, Eddie, but you have to think! There were three of them, and only two of us, and we are 800 miles from home with no cell service and no backup!”
Eddie, infuriatingly, just shrugs. “So what? I could’ve taken them.”
“Hand-to-hand? Yeah, maybe. But what if one of them had a knife? Or a gun?”
“It wouldn’t matter.”
“It wouldn’t ma—” Buck blinks, once, then twice. “It wouldn’t matter?”
or: a Mother’s Boy rewrite. The car breaks down, so Buck and Eddie have to spend the night in the motel. There’s only one bed. Buck has a lot of questions. Sappy smut ensues.

Summary
“I’m not leaving you, Buck.” Eddie says with a tired sigh, like he’s struggling with the weight of the world and Buck’s the one who put it there. “Just switching jobs, that’s all.”
That’s all?, Buck wants to scream, because every relationship he has is tied to the job in some way, and first Maddie left, and then it was Chimney, and now it’s Eddie. But he doesn’t scream, because that would be a little bit too tragic, even for him, and nods instead. Bites his tongue. Pretends that he isn't falling apart where he's stood.

Summary
"Or, I could, um," Buck hesitated. He didn't ever want to do anything that could negatively impact their friendship. Then again, he'd already stood there and watched red-faced as Eddie came. In for a penny, as the saying went. "Clean it up. For you."
