Summary
Frank Langdon had been sober for three hundred and sixty-three days, divorced for two hundred and twelve, and in love with Mel King for so long now that he couldn’t remember what his brain sounded like before her.
The sobriety milestones were easier to quantify.
Love, unfortunately, was less cooperative.

“Why didn’t I call you?” she sneered.
“Yeah, yeah, why didn’t you call me?”
The fuck. “Why didn’t I call you, Carmen?”
“Yes!”
“Because if I wanted to waste my fucking time, I would talk to the wall, dude. If I wanted to talk to myself, I would just talk to myself like I did at Kasama.”

Summary
That’s his bright spot, though—the thing he clings to on his first day, then continues to hold onto tightly thereafter: Mel.
Where he had felt out of step with everyone else, he and her were right on beat together, dancing around the ED, just as they had on her first day. He had been shocked how easily they picked up where they’d left off. There was no wariness towards him, no undercurrent of judgement, no hesitation to let him treat a patient. She didn’t hold him back, she pushed him forward. It was what he needed more than anything.

OR: The only thing that really makes Frank feel good about being back at the Pitt is Mel. He holds on tight to her, even when other men in the ED seem to want her too.Bookmarked by NelReads
