Leon S. Kennedy has been an agent for the US Government for fifteen years. He's a man without a history, every line in his file covered in thick ink, redacting all the reasons he drinks too much and is now in mandated therapy. Leon would sooner defuse bombs than be in therapy, because the landmines within his mind pose far more risks than actual explosives. What he isn't ordered to do is keep returning to the small, sun-warmed coffee shop called Papa Joe's. That part just... happens.
You used to believe you could hold space for people's pain. A therapist by trade, a caretaker at heart, you built your life around helping people until everything fell apart. The sudden loss of your husband and the death of a client shatters your world view and forces you to start a new life in Washington D.C. Unable to return to your old life now, you pour what remains of yourself into something tangible: flour, espresso, and the stubborn ritual of opening the shop door every morning even when you don't want to.
On paper, you both are a disaster, but love has a funny way of operating outside of conventional means.

And then you met him in a bar. For one hour, just one hour, you finally felt alive. Life was good. You were heard. You were listened to. You existed as a real human being after decades of depravity. Most importantly, for one entire hour on a singular Friday night, you were valued. And then, just as he arrived, he was gone, and your world returned to the same tedious shades of grey. But it hurt more. You were lonelier, sadder, degraded by joy and company. You knew what you'd been missing all your life, and you'd never have a chance to get it again.You prayed every day that somebody, anybody, could take you away from all of your pain.
What a pity your prayer was answered.
