Summary
“Does it annoy you? That I am never prepared?” A memory shot through his mind like a shock of electricity; a familiar voice, disapproving eyes, the word 'lazy' thrown at him with vitriol in both of the languages he spoke, just to make sure he got the point.
“No,” Shane's response was certain, decisive. “I just wanted a little more time with you. Before you have to leave.”
Or: Four times Ilya learns what it means to be loved, and one time he realizes that he already knew.

Summary
Drunk words are sober thoughts. He’s heard this phrase most of his life, but never let himself get inebriated enough to test the theory. Until now, that is.
Shane sits in the corner booth at the back of the bar, away from all of his teammates. He’s four drinks and two shots in, way above his usual threshold. The water Hayden ordered him from the bar has left condensation in a puddle on the table as he stared at the contact in his phone.

Summary
On the couch, Hayden is sprawled as if he’s the one paying the mortgage, socked feet on the coffee table, controller in his hands. His grin is sharp and triumphant, lit by the TV glow. Beside him, Ilya sits upright, knees angled toward the screen, controller held with serious intent. He looks personally offended by whatever is happening on the screen.
The final buzzer sounds. The screen flashes something celebratory, and Hayden pumps his fist.
Ilya’s shoulders slump, betrayed by the concept of virtual hockey. “Fine,” he says, pouting like a child who has never once lost in his life. “You win. You are only better in this game anyway.”
Hayden’s laugh is immediate and delighted. “Fuck you.”

Summary
“I was trying to be cool about it.” Shane's confession is a quiet whine, muffled into his palms. “Go with the flow, y’know?”
It’s almost unbearable, how much Ilya adores this perfect, neurotic man. “Hollander,” he says patiently. “You have never once gone with flow. Not ever in your life.”
There is only one grey cloud in the perfect blue sky of Ilya’s summer.
His two weeks at the cottage are almost over, and Shane still hasn’t asked him to stay.
