It’s no secret that Draco Malfoy is happiest when all attention is on him.
He’s been like this since they were at least eleven, but Hermione speculates that he was like this even before then. Between her Bombarda and Draco’s Confringo, an unbidden image of a newborn with tufts of silver-blond hair flexing chubby hands to garner recognition disrupts her (objectively more pressing) thoughts.
Draco’s proclivity for attention-seeking is what lands them here, thinks Hermione, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, dueling marauding wizards sans back-up.
[In which Hermione writes off Draco’s attempts to impress her as attention-seeking endeavors, leading Draco to pursue ludicrous ventures to win her heart — including by convincing her that he is such a fantastic Auror that they can handle a ship full of pirates on their own. Summary
Draco had set out to accomplish many goals upon his return to Hogwarts for eighth year: Obtain seven NEWTs. Perform all Head Boy duties with grace and precision. Win the Inter-House Quidditch Cup. Convince the student body that he is no longer prejudiced. Survive.
Fancying Hermione Granger was absolutely *not* one of those goals.
And yet, he finds himself head over broom for the witch by the beginning of their second term.
Because Draco cannot--simply cannot--fancy Hermione Granger, he resolves to undertake a series of tasks to dispel his feelings for her.
Guiding him is Crookshanks, who has, Draco belatedly discovers, his own, conflicting goals regarding Draco and Granger.

It’s a perfectly ordinary day when the world (or, at least Draco’s dimension) is thrown into disarray.
Draco—a highly competent, skilled Auror—should have expected as much, for the most unusual days begin normally. It’s a law of Muggle physics, probably.
Alas, Draco is off his game when he and Granger are confronted with a pair of their doppelgängers from another dimension.
Nobody can blame him for failing to expect the second and third pairs.
Draco — along with three versions of himself, each worse than the last — pairs up with Granger — and three versions of herself, each as stunning and brilliant as the others — to both (1) solve the mystery of their inter-dimensional copies' sudden appearances, and (2) save the world (or four dimensions thereof).
All the while, each Draco attempts to charm his respective Granger and demonstrate his superiority over the others.

Summary
At a holiday party for Ministry employees, Granger explains the muggle tradition of setting a New Year’s resolution to Draco.
Draco, who has recently discovered that his feelings for her are more than platonic, latches onto the idea. What better time to “buckle down”—as the muggleborns say—on his efforts than January 1?
And so, Draco has decided, in the amount of time it takes her to describe the concept, that his New Year's resolution will consist of one lofty goal: to woo Hermione Granger.
All he has to do is navigate decoy, mid, and quarter year resolutions, join a fantasy (American) football team, train for a sprint triathlon, keep an overbearing Theodore Nott away from Granger, and dodge suspicious looks from overprotective Potters.
