Hugo doesn't remember a lot of his childhood. He has times where he just goes numb and can't remember anything and he feels like a puppet in his own body watching his life play out and trying to function and he can't form any kind of coherent thoughts and before he can blink it's been 2 weeks. But it hasn't happened in a while.

Varian always wore his gloves, and always wore long sleeves. In the middle of fucking summer.
Even Hugo had started wearing shorter sleeves as the weather heated up and showed a few scars on his arms, something he'd thankfully gotten no questions about.

It's not the ever present ache of his missing eye that used to follow him every waking second, nor the quiet underlying sense of dread that had never left him, cultivated by his own design to keep the silvertree roots at bay before the medics at the healing spire has cut him open and removed it with a precision no one thought possible. No, this was an entirely different sort of misery, one that was so mundane it bordered on comical in contrast to what he had endured.
Qifrey, quite plainly, is sick.
Or: Two years after getting rid of the silvertree seed, something new starts growing. -
