I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

Peter sighed and stared at his beer, turning the bottle to unseeingly stare at the label. “I don’t know, Wade, it’s just…” Peter trailed off.
“Just what?” Wade pushed gently. Sometimes with Peter, he had to lead the conversation back to the problem Peter was having when he trailed off. It happened often enough when real life responsibilities started to become fuddled with the super hero life and Peter couldn’t figure out how to balance them.
“I don’t know how much longer I can do this, Wade,” Peter sighed deeply. He slouched in on himself like the weight of the world he held up on his shoulders for so long was finally breaking him down.

Peter’s stomach turned over. Partners, those two tiny syllables resonating with larger-than-life finality. They sounded like standing on the edge of a cliff, listening to waves breaking against the rocks hundreds of meters below. It’s not real, he reminded himself. It’s only observation. Really, really up close observation, but observation nonetheless.

He was never able to connect with anyone, at least not the way Harley connected with their dad, or the way Morgan had everyone wrapped around her little finger since the day she was born.
Peter was just there, in a way he believed that he wasn't important, not to his family anyway. That was what he always believed, at least before he got his powers and became the one and only Spider-man.

Homecoming AU.
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves.
Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. So they strike a deal. Peter will help Tony. In return, the mask stays on.

Tony Stark makes the offer again. This time, it’s for serious. Peter thinks about it, and asks a few friends for advice.

“He says,” Peter swallows, “He says I could. Like. Make more of a difference? In the Avengers.”
“Okay,” Matt says. With Matt, it’s a toss of the coin what sort of reaction you’ll get; Matt only has two modes of treating emotion, and one is to deliver long, heartfelt speeches where he ends up crying at the end, and the other is to hiss like the stray cat he is in his soul, and to run away to go terrorise some terrorists down at the docks. The third option is one Peter’s only been told about by Wade and by Mr Nelson, and that is for Matt to curl up in a ball, hands over his ears, and curse into his knees until someone gives him noise-cancelling headphones and a cup of something warm and caffeinated.
Peter isn’t sure which option he’d prefer, now.
