Summary
For this prompt on the ME Kink Meme: Eventual MShep/Kaidan. Kaidan sees Shepard interacting with Cortez and is sad because he thinks his missed out. Pines a little. Unbeknownst to him though Shepard is just getting along with Cortez so well because Cortez called him on liking Kaidan and Shepard is relieved to just have someone to talk about it with.
Cue Cortez trying to get them together despite Kaidan's standoffishness. Kaidan angsting because Cortez keeps telling him how awesome Shepard is.

And later, when he's standing on the Normandy's landing ramp watching Anderson run back into the burning city, the Reapers landing in the destroyed remains, evacuation shuttles blowing up in the sky, the dog tags in his fist cutting harshly into the skin on his palm as he refuses the stinging in his eyes... he leans back into Kaidan until their shoulders knock and the man says "it's okay".
Or, that time I got irritated at the lack of emotion in every MShep/Kaidan cutscene and rewrote them all.

The galaxy tries to find the way forward, in the wake of the destruction of the reapers.
Post-ME3, destroy ending, but completely ignores the whole ‘destroy all synthetics’ thing. Basically, the reapers are destroyed and everyone else lives. Also assumes that Kaidan and Male Shepard had a romantic relationship in ME1.“You drank ryncol?” Kaidan hissed at him, clearly not prepared to let that one go.

Summary
Believing that they would never survive the fight against Saren, Kaidan Alenko propositioned Commander Shepard before the final battle as a last request. And after their survival, Shepard's death, and the commander's dealings with Cerberus, Kaidan never grew to trust the man again; refusing to rejoin the Normandy's crew. Now that the war is over, Kaidan has been put in charge of Shepard's recovery - a request from the man himself, and is forced to confront what was, and what could have been, three years ago.

SPOILERS FOR EXTENDED CUT DLC! An EC-compliant post-game fic of belated but no less appreciated reunions. Three squadmates who've loved Shepard, lost Shepard, and found Shepard again, not to mention all the crap they've learned from him in between. They left the plaque with Kaidan because somebody had to carry the heavy things. And, presumably, because Garrus was working on the Normandy’s new calibrations.
