Harris flopped backward on the bed, both hands over his face.
“How,” he said. “Did you forget.”

"Rozanov?" he says, almost without meaning to. Surely he's mistaken and is about to be told to fuck off. Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.
"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."
Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.
Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.

Then, the line clicked. But there was no "Hello?"
“This is Ilya. I never check my voicemail.”
Hayden pulled the phone away from his ear, staring at the screen as if it had just exploded. The name still read Lily. But the voice… the voice was low, gravelly, with that Russian accent he’d been hearing scream across the ice for years.

Cliff Marleau had been aware of Svetlana Vetrova for years, and of course he was aware of how beautiful she was. At the Hollander-Rozanov wedding, he got the chance to talk to her for the first time in a few years. Afterwards, he couldn't get her off his mind, until he saw her at one of the nightclubs back in Boston. When she shows up at his door in the middle of the night, winded and not dressed for the middle of winter, it isn't too hard to figure out her recent trip to Russia didn't go well. It gets hard when he has to figure out how to make her feel safe. Especially when they both know she probably isn't.
Svetlana had been thinking about settling down for a few years, but now that it seems like it might be within her grasp she grapples with the reality that she never can. Not if she cares to protect the people she cares about.

Scott crossed the third item off the list he'd found in the trash a few weeks ago, written in Kip's unmistakable scholarly scrawl. Why Kip had tossed it was not something Scott wanted to think about right now, or frankly ever, but he was glad he'd found it.
Because now Scott had months worth of potential date ideas to surprise Kip with. Although he'd have to be careful about it. Subtle. Not just go down the list of items that Kip had so carefully written out, likely having selected each idea from his brilliant mind over the past three years, since a blue and a black pen had been used, and the paper was stained in more than one spot.
... Anyway, Scott had lovingly dubbed the list "Kip's Relationship Bucket List," or "KRBL" for short. (Rhymes with gerbil. Duh.)

Carter’s parents have always teased him about his tendency to take in strays. It started when he was three years old and brought a rabbit with a broken leg from their yard to his room, claiming that since it was hurt, it needed his bed more than he did. The animals changed over the years, ranging from birds with damaged wings to a three legged puppy from the shelter he volunteered at in high school, but the feeling of needing to protect something so lost and vulnerable never went away.
He felt the same looking at Scott’s boyfriend alone on the ice.
