"Hey, Mel," he offered her, his voice weak. Mel tilted her head to one side. For just a moment, the shadows of the ambulance bay cast a darkness over his left eye like a bruise.
"Hey, Frankie," she whispered.
Frank Langdon looked down at his feet, shaking his head slowly. Mel found herself walking over to him before she had even decided to move. They stood alone, together in the silent bay.

An alternate universe in which 12-year-old Melissa King meets a strange boy in the woods behind her home.
