“Friendly chats. For years. On Instagram.” Ilya glanced up at Shane, who looked… confused. Truly, honestly confused. Like they’d been sending cordial emails and not Instagram chats. And why did that make Ilya smile? A low, rich laugh slipped from his lips. “You really have no idea?”

    “What?”

“Instagram is for… chatting, yes?” Ilya waggled his eyebrows. “But also, for, what do you call it? Sliding into DMs?”

    “Olesya.”
“Oh-lee-syah,” Shane repeated slowly, making sure he pronounced it right. “What… what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” Ilya said, resting his head in his hand. “I don’t fucking know.”
Shane’s voice was steady. “What can I do?”
How long had it been since someone offered to help Ilya? He took care of his family, carried his brother’s financial burdens, tended his own injuries, paid his way through life without aid. The question, softly spoken and rich with genuine intent, was enough to bring tears to his eyes. Could he really trust it? Could he ask someone for help?
For once, he wanted to try.

OR: Ilya is left with sudden custody of Alexei's daughter and calls Shane to help.

    Summary

Playing on the same team for the past two years made some things both easier and more complicated; they didn’t need to juggle separate practices or games, but it also meant that one couldn’t fill in for the other when non-hockey responsibilities cropped up. For that, they were exceedingly grateful for Yuna and David. It hadn’t taken long for them to slip into the roles of doting grandparents, despite having no time to prepare. Olesya had already been a rambunctious toddler when she first charged into their lives, and they’d taken each day since in stride.

    Summary

Good riddance, he thinks. Or maybe feels obligated to think. He’s not sure. It feels like a natural thing to think about a brother who hit you and insulted you and extorted you for most of your short, miserable time together. He’s thought about it before, Alexei dying. The life he lived had not been conductive to longevity.

I am the last Rozanov, he thinks, and that is an emotion he can parse, finally: closure. Like setting the last piece down in a puzzle.

It’s only after the first puff of smoke escapes his lips that Ilya remembers Alexei’s daughter.

    Or:
Two years after he gets married, Ilya Rozanov receives the news that his older brother has died.

    Summary

Ilya doesn’t know what he expected when Katya called him, but this certainly isn’t it.

    A daughter.

His eighteen-year-old niece has a toddler.

It’s not just Mila’s existence, although that in and of itself is a surprise to say the least, but it is everything about the two of them.

Mila is silent, eyes wide and searching. She hasn’t uttered a single word.

Katya responds when spoken to, quietly, politely. Scared.

Or: Ilya Rozanov's niece turns eighteen, and with the money from her trust, she flees to Canada with her toddler in tow.
