    Summary

Mike leaned back slightly, gripping the chains, staring up at the sky as it shifted from blue to purple. He thought about everything they’d lost and everything they’d somehow kept. About how Will had been brave in ways Mike still didn’t understand. About how he’d almost lost him, more times than he could count.

“I was really scared,” Mike said suddenly, before he could stop himself.

Will turned to look at him. “Of what?”

“Of losing you,” Mike admitted, his voice quieter now.

    💕💕💕💕

Mike starts kissing Will on the cheek. He tells himself it’s about comfort, about making sure Will is still here. He tells himself it doesn’t mean anything at all.

    He is very wrong.

“He says it’s about protecting the kingdom,” Mike said, quieter now. “But who is he protecting it from? Fathers? Children? People trying to survive?”

Will’s fingers tightened slightly against Mike’s shoulders, a silent reminder that he was there.

“Fear makes people cruel,” Will said gently. “And sometimes… fear makes them believe they’re right, even when they're not.”

Mike searched his face. “Do you believe that?”

Will held his gaze. Careful. Measured.

“I believe,” he said slowly, “that you would do it differently. You will do it differently.”

    In Hawkins, magic is treason.

Will has spent his life hiding what he is, protecting the prince from the shadows, and pretending his heart doesn’t belong to him.

Mike has spent his life trying not to become his father.

When monsters rise, secrets unravel, and love refuses to stay hidden, the cost of the truth may be higher than either of them can survive.

    Summary

“We haven’t done this since middle school,” Will says, voice barely above a whisper.

“Huh,” Mike whispers back. “Yeah, guess not.”

A couple years ago, Mike read a National Geographic article about a phenomenon called the polar night. In the farthest north and south regions of the globe, there are weeks, sometimes months depending on how close you are to the poles, where the sun does not rise above the horizon, plunging the world into a perpetual nighttime. Living in such conditions, the article had explained, can affect one’s circadian rhythm, heighten issues with concentration and energy levels, and cause a spike in depressive symptoms among local populations. Some resort to using light therapy lamps to mimic the daylight.

It was only after the Byers moved away, all those years ago, that Mike began to understand what the prolonged absence of the sun can do to a person.

The Upside Down is gone, and everyone has made it out unscathed. In the aftermath of the not-so-end of the world, snowballs turn into avalanches. Sometimes it just takes time.

or: Mike gets into Brown, Will gets into RISD, and the friends-to-???-to-lovers slowburn that ensues.
