Summary
It was a river that stretched from the beginning of time to the end of all things. It didn't seem very big. Not when they were children.
Wei Wuxian had been good friends with the river. He loved it with all his heart, but not as much as he loved them. He said he had come from across the river to play with them.
Wen Qing said that Wei Wuxian had been out of his mind when he had a mind to spare, and that he had left all his sense in the old country. Wen Ning said it was a shame that the old country had broken in half.
Wen Qing said that he was wrong, and that the place that had broken in half wasn't the real old country.
She said Wei Wuxian had drowned the real old country.

In Yunmeng, there is a particular tale that criss crosses generations and has seeped as a fact to its residents. While this may not be heard outside of its borders, this urban myth runs rampant within.
The Ghost of Lotus Pier.
(prompt: Au where after dying wwx’s soul returns to lotus pier in the form of ghost. No one can see him unless he wants them too, so he stays in lotus pier protecting its inhabitants (guiding lost children home, helping the crops grow, protecting families from corpses, etc.) and he eventually becomes an urban myth known as the fairy of lotus pier. Even though not many can see him, they still know someone is there helping them. Children often pick up lotuses for him and hang them on trees like ornaments.)

Summary
"Is that something that Wei Ying would like?" Lan Wangji asks softly, carefully, "To be kept?"
There's that fleeting, lost look in Wei Ying's eyes once more, and Lan Wangji thinks it's unacceptable - That Wei Ying had not felt welcomed in his own home, so much so that he decided to wander the world away from it. So much so that he is afraid that he would be unwelcome as well elsewhere.
Lan Wangji barely stops himself from hissing, from letting the steam of his icy breath escape in the close air between them. He only vaguely remembers the Jiangs, a young Cultivation Clan barely a century old, but his disdain towards them feels ancient now in the wake of all this. How foolish of them, to simply let go of someone so bright, someone so unfailingly kind and giving.
How convenient, for Lan Wangji's own gain.

Lan Wangji does not mean to return to Yiling.
Nothing grows on the Burial Mounds. In the natural world, grave sites are fertile ground for new growth, the decay of human bodies providing rich food for both animal and plant life, but the resentful energy of the murdered piled in their mass graves leeches life out of anything that tries to take root here.
But here is a tree, alive amongst all the husks, small and with sprouting leaves. It's not even the right season for sprouting leaves.

Do not go near Wei Ying.
The words are clear and concise, etched neatly into the unyielding stone of Gusu Lan's wall of rules by Grandmaster Lan Qiren himself. It's unmistakable too, having the Wei character for ghost and Ying for infant - Clearly meant to allude towards one specific person living in the Cloud Recesses.
For a long time, Lan Jingyi has always taken Grandmaster Lan's chiding of him "not upholding Gusu Lan conduct appropriately," with some measure of practiced aplomb. Years of being under Hanguang-Jun's careful tutelage has taught him that there is more to being righteous and moral than mere writings on the wall, and Jingyi has learned to shrug off the more arbitrary reprimands of his home Sect.
But as he stands before the Discipline wall, he doesn't think he wants to do that this time. To simply shrug it off and let it go. And from the carefully concealed frowns on his fellow disciples' faces, he suspects that he might not be alone in his sentiment.

Wei Ying clicked in subdued agreement. Lan Wangji didn’t understand. He’d made every preparation for every possibility and wish, but never for Gusu. Wei Ying had never wanted to go, gone as far as nearly drowning Lan Wangji when he’d suggested it the last time, years ago.
“Why?”
When Lan Wangji was fifteen, Yunmeng Jiang sent its disciples to the Cloud Recesses for their exchange program. Unlike any other sect, they'd arrived on a boat, accompanied by merfolk.
