Reina glanced at her, uncertain how to respond. She capped the barley tea and set it between them. “What about you? Are you…happy?”
Kumiko looked out over the river, the festival lights flickering on its surface. “I think so,” she said. “I’m not sure you can ever know for sure, but…yes, I think so.”
Reina didn’t press. Instead, she watched as Kumiko’s fingers traced small circles on her stomach, as if she were tuning an invisible instrument. It was oddly beautiful, and just a little painful to watch.
