Flower-sickness, it was called. Lótë-nai, in Old Quenya. Maglor had sung ballads of star-crossed lovers perishing from its effects: the roots digging into lungs, petals dragging blood out of throats, the poor victim suffocating in silence. It struck those who believed their feelings unrequited, who gave up hope in any happy union. The only way to cure it would be for Maglor to confess his love, and then to have that love returned. An impossibility, for the one Maglor loved most in the world was Maedhros.
And Maedhros loved Fingon.

This time, it was Nerdanel who interrupted, her voice a warning. Maedhros couldn’t quite make out the words, but her meaning was clear: Shut up, smarty-pants!
“Of course,” Fëanor returned to the phone, reverting to his clear, didactic tone, “I’m exaggerating for effect, as I’m known to. I would never defect or betray my country…. No, Professor, you won’t. I’m afraid you’ll need to handle this one yourselves. I will not be bought, and I’ll be much obliged if you don’t call with such offers again.”
The Space Race begins when Doriath launches the world's first artificial satellite. Fëanor, a renowned astrophysicist of Aman, becomes obsessed with the potential of radio astronomy to contact the far reaches of the universe. Maedhros grows up and takes on his father's cause. Years later, a message is received.

Should he have been more forceful in pushing away Maedhros' lone wandering hand when it rested in a place it had no right to be for the first time? Should he have resisted summoning him to his chambers while the fortress slept? Should he have admonished him for licentiousness like a strict but hypocritical father?
Maedhros fulfills Fingolfin's secret, shameful fantasy.
