His rich, throaty laughter follows her, carrying easily over the band playing a bolero about star-crossed lovers. He knows it reaches her when her shoulders stiffen, when she cocks her head to the side before spinning on her heel.
He is mesmerized by the way her hair whips around her in a raven arc of silk, but the look she pins him down with could set the entire room ablaze. His little drama queen. All fire and fury. All his.
Before she can turn away again, he’s on her, crossing the space between them in long, purposeful strides. He catches her wrist in his hand, heat searing from her bare skin, seeping into his palm as he pulls her in close. He missed this. Missed her.

When she turned to him, her expression betrayed the barest hint of surprise before that stoic little mask of hers slipped into place. His Little Warden. So serious, until she wasn't—writhing and purring beneath his touch, snickering under the tease of his beard across her bare flesh.
Nothing was all she answered with, an eyebrow arching with a poise he loved about her, the question clear in her gaze; and what if I am?
His stomach flipped, that same sink and flutter every time he looked at her for too long, any time she was too far away to run his fingers along her skin.

And it’s better that way, she told herself, trying to smother the rush of excitement she had felt upon seeing him.
