My breath sits lodged at the top of my throat, until I feel pressure building behind my eyes. By the time I take a deep inhale, I'm on the verge of laughing hysterically at the absurdity of this encounter. Thankfully, a giggle is all that makes it through the delayed hysteria.
"I said a few things."
"You certainly did, darling." He turns from me, only to pour two fingers of whiskey into a glass, then two more into another right beside. "But when I asked you what you wanted, tell me again what you said."
My gaze is hungry as it takes him in, the solid line of his shoulders softened by the gracefulness of his movements. The coat he wears clings close to his torso, easing at the hips where the dark finery drinks in the low light of the room. Made for darkness, I think.
