Summary
She hugged her knees to her chest, allowing her eyes to fall shut for just a moment so she could lose herself to the devastating extent of her failure. The one saving grace of this whole mess was the knife in that man’s throat, the man from the picture. From what she understood he was some kind of politician—not that it mattered. Dead bodies didn’t have jobs, didn’t have thoughts, didn’t have names. And the moment they handed her that photo, that’s what he was—just another dead body on the pile.
Hawks, though. Hawks wasn’t a face in a faded photograph, a corpse waiting to be made. Hawks was a complication.
She hated complications.
