The sound which leaves Hua Cheng’s lips this time isn't nearly feral, it /is/ feral, the fury of a wild beast confronted with a mortal foe. Before he can lift so much as a hand to stop him Hua Cheng jerks away from Xie Lian and lunges for Fang Xin, snatching it from the floor and raising it high above his head. It’s a horrifying scene, if an outsider were to stumble upon the scene he’d think the ghost was the only human thing left there, the rest charred to ash and his god…
To the ghost the next few moments are a blur. Somehow his god, what's left of him, was now resting on the charred floor (anything’s better than that altar right?).
Dark blood still sluggishly leaves his body, slower now but still there’s too much blood and entrails exposed for the ghost to feel comfortable wandering too far, despite the pull of his body trying to lead him astray.

The temple had clearly been abandoned a while ago; aged and weathered, even its establishment plaque had fallen off at some point. There was absolutely nothing special about it.
And yet, looking at it, something in Xie Lian’s chest grew tight. That something compelled him to walk closer, closer, closer, climbing the steps to the temple proper even as his feet grew increasingly leaden. One of the temple doors was askew, and the other groaned weakly as he pushed it open.
Inside was nothing. Not a person, not a statue, not an offering. Just an altar, empty and alone.
And looking at that altar, something suddenly occurred to Xie Lian.
Oh. It’s been a year.

“Uh huh.” What were we talking about again? “It- it was nothing.”
Wuming retreated to a distance that didn’t tempt Xie Lian quite so much to dive back in. His lips were quirked faintly, his eye half-lidded. His gaze lingered on Xie Lian for a few moments before it dropped to the wad of fabric in his hand. Xie Lian took the chance to recompose himself.
“...It’s really nothing special,” he said.
“I love it.” Wuming’s voice brooked no quarter.

So quietly devastated and confused that it reinforced two things for Xie Lian: that Wuming really did care, truly, deeply, ardently; and that no one had ever returned that care once in his life.
