Summary

Once upon a time, as a boy at school, Stede had gone along to track a fox.
It was fun, at first. He adored the tall black boots and smart red jacket– any occasion that called for a look. Besides, everyone else was wearing it, and it was so rare for him to feel like part of the group. And he liked riding through the countryside, the song of the hounds, the red-gold autumn sunlight, the way the fallen leaves whirled and fluttered as the white horses ran.
But once the fox was caught, and Stede saw her frightened eyes, and her soft ears, and her thick auburn fur shining gold in the sun, he broke down weeping, begging the others to let her go. Instead they laughed, and sent their dogs down into her little house in the ground, and shot her when she tried to run away.
In the lead-up to a world-historic act of piracy, Stede fears that Edward may be falling out of love with him.
