Contrary to how it may feel, the mind is oftentimes fully prepared to deal with unpleasant emotions. Sadness, anger and fear aren't here to torture us. They're there to help us process difficult situations and act to make things better.
Sometimes, however, when the difficult feelings are pushed down for a bit too long, and one too many unfortunate event breaks the camel's back, well...
Or: The Doctor, Amy and Rory get to properly grieve the whole When A Good Man Goes To War and Let's Kill Hitler situation, before they're ready to return to business as usual. And they do so quite messily. Especially the Doctor.
