Three months ago, her usually impeccable outfits disappeared. Rumpled clothing, unwashed and stained, had become the norm, sometimes with unmatched tops and bottoms. Any time he’d point out a snag, or Scourgify the evidence of spilled coffee, she’d blush and mumble about being behind on laundry. An easy excuse, almost believable, but he could see through the lie.
Two months ago, dark circles developed under her eyes, like she hadn’t been sleeping properly. When he asked her about it, she claimed she had found a new book series she couldn’t put down, and instead of a normal bedtime, she’d been awake well into the night turning page after page.
It was something else that most people would laugh off as just normal Hermione behavior. The deceit was good, almost too good, but Draco had learned to read her well over their time working together. Whenever she wasn’t being truthful, she’d tuck a curl behind her ear, and her smile would be a tad too wide.
After this, his focus on her sharpened, watching for more worrisome tells that something was wrong.
