It was Rui’s third year of middle school when he was asked to see a therapist.
Rui Kamishiro sat stiffly in the waiting room chair, hands tucked neatly into the sleeves of his school blazer. The cushions were too soft; he kept sinking into them, and every time he did, he sat up straighter, as if good posture could somehow shield him from how exposed he felt. His eyes wandered—not because he was curious, but because staring at the floor made his thoughts echo too loudly.
He tugged lightly on one of the loose threads at his cuff. Why am I even here?
It wasn’t like anything was wrong. At least… not in a way he knew how to explain.
Teachers said he seemed withdrawn. His parents said he seemed distant. His classmates didn’t say anything to him at all.
And Rui wasn’t sure if he wanted them to.

Rui once stepped into Satsuki’s office unsure, guarded, and painfully alone. Now, at his last appointment, he returns with the three people who have changed his life more than he ever expected.

It all started at the Shibuya Festa, where Mafuyu met a boy who claimed to relate to her feelings. He had met her for the first time that day, and though it was her slip-up that let him see the true side of her, he still claimed to know how she felt. She wonders, briefly, as she watches Kanade click at her keyboard and squint at her monitor, how he would react if he could see her now.
Her question is somewhat answered only hours later, when she sees him again, down the aisle at the convenience store.

I got inspired by what’s going on in season 4, but I don’t plan for this fic to have season 4 spoilers. But there will be spoilers for season 1, 2, and 3 (up to arc 5)! So be warned!
