    Early in life, almost before he was conscious of it, Mycroft Holmes understood that he had a duty of care to his brother - a troubled, untethered man, sensitive to all the miasmic connections of the material world.

    He had allowed himself, through the course of his life, a single active choice unrelated (but in the end, useful) to this obligation: his career. His pride and joy and the ultimate use of his cerebral talents.

    As Sherlock matures, and his tenuous connection to humanity writ large strengthens, Mycroft finds he is needed less and less. Increasingly deprived of his single focus, he pours himself into his work, keeping global status quo by whatever means necessary.

    By chance he meets Mariam. A woman, not a goldfish, but a representation of all things he works to tamp down in the world. As an unlikely, stumbling friendship threatens to blossom into something more, both Mycroft and Mariam are faced with contradiction, questioning the morality of the other and the meaning of their own paths in life.
