Summary
Before Shishitoren, Noroshi, and the heavy weight of Bofurin’s legacy — there was Sakura Haruka, his smile, and a road Hayato specifically paved with good intentions.
Hayato didn't mind having to tutor Sakura in most things. The boy was dumb as bricks when it came to basic arithmetic and English (as is common for half the population of the whole damn school), but he possessed a gentle and almost child-like curiosity for everything. Anything he could get his hands on, soaking up information like a plant in the sun.
Hayato didn't mind the after class discussions, the late nights in the local library, and the sleepovers spent poring over a stack of Sakura's barely legible notes. This was his captain, and someone Hayato trusted with his life. They didn't have assignments or exams to begin with — but when the other boy pleaded with Suo for “biology help” one morning patrol, Hayato didn't think twice before agreeing immediately.

“I’m sorry,” Matt chokes out, bleeding sluggishly onto Foggy’s kitchen windowsill. “M’ so sorry, fuck.”
Foggy thinks there’s plenty of things to say about Matt’s compulsion to apologize. Things that sound like the toll of a church bell or the shrill chords of an organ. He wonders if those things ring horribly loud to Matt’s heightened senses. He wonders if his urge to say sorry rings even louder. Foggy’s never properly stepped foot in a church, but somehow he thinks he already knows what it would sound like.
“You’re ruining my marble counters,” Foggy says instead.

Hajime likes to think that he is kind. He doesn't assume that reputation weightlessly, neither self-assumptive nor presumptuous in nature. He's heard it from friends, foes, and everywhere in between. In caring for the people he loves, he makes them happy with words and actions and time well spent. Hajime is forgiving, in most cases. Trusting, and maybe even a bit naive.
“Umemiya, why the hell do you keep draggin' me up here?"
It’s not an insult (it's just his name, after all) but with the way it's growled, it may as well be one. Sakura stares him down from across the row of cherry tomatoes. There's dirt on his cheekbone and he’s removed his jacket from the heat, but he still has a nasty glare that could freeze hell over. Hajime idly wonders who he picked that up from. Hiragi? Not likely. Kaji? More plausible. Himself? …well.
Hajime is a kind man. He’d even go at lengths to say he is a noble one too. Yet, there is something about Sakura Haruka that brings out the devil in him.

Bruce smirks a little, “Pretty old.”
“How old am I?” Dick rephrases the question. Realistically, given the lines on Bruce's face and the grey in his hair, he has to be more than a decade or two in the future. But, well, Dick's still reeling from being twelve. He can't begin to imagine a world where there's anything past tomorrow.
Bruce's smirk sinks a little, but not quite to a frown. It's a distant smile, fighting through the shadows of whatever it is Bruce sees when he looks down at him. In a quiet, mournful tone, he says, “Not that old. Not old at all.”
