“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. The air is still warm from this day that has already slipped away, and the traffic somewhere distant reminds Draco a little of the ocean heard from far off. The sweet, slightly acrid scent of tobacco lingers in the air, and Draco can scarcely believe he’s here, right now, in this slightly unreal pocket of time, laughing on a crummy back stoop with Potter.
what a tenderly-crafted atmosphere this story has! really sweet dialogues and interactions between all the characters and i love the little idiosyncracies of the slytherin gang

reread on 28.04.25: brilliant lore-building around magical healing. draco's character is explored in such a careful, grounded manner and it feels very true to canon while adding layers of complexity that make him so lovable <3 i really enjoyed the process of harry discovering that draco's rudeness had no correlation to any potential evil lurking inside him but was just a part of draco's character. and i don't want to understate just how clever all the medical theory was - it was so interesting i could read a whole separate fic about it. amazing story!!!
