Summary
Mel King planned her life out to a T when she was thirteen years old.
What she hadn't planned for was meeting Frank Langdon on her first day of college at Penn State.
She definitely hadn't planned on becoming best friends with him.
And she absolutely hadn't planned on falling in love with him.

Summary
Abby considered herself to be a graceful person. She remained graceful when she accidentally got pregnant during undergrad, resulting in her and Frank’s shotgun wedding. She also kept that same grace when her husband admitted he was a drug addict and went to rehab, leaving her to take care of both of their young children by herself.
If she could navigate all of that with her dignity mostly intact, she figured she could manage a beginner ballet class.
OR: Abby and Mel meet at ballet class. Abby knows who she is; Mel doesn’t.

Summary
When he finds the courage to leave the comfort of her steam shrouded bathroom, he makes his way out to the living room.
He stops in his tracks when he hears her, a fond smile etching onto his face.
He’s careful to disguise his footsteps on the vinyl floor, not wanting her to stop. He was rapidly beginning to realize he could listen to her sing forever.
She flits around the kitchen, alternating between humming and singing along to whatever music played in her ear, and all Frank can do is watch.
“Oh!” She says with a jolt when she finally notices him, “Frank! How are you feeling? I made spaghetti…spaghetti’s okay, right?”
“Yeah.” He nodded, “Yeah, spaghetti’s okay.”
She shuffles out of the kitchen a few moments later with two bowls in tow, “We can sit at the table, the couch…whatever you’re most comfortable with. If you want we can put something on the TV, that’s what Becca usually likes to do…”
“I like when you sing.” He can’t stop the words from coming, and he doesn’t regret them one bit when he watches her face change shades if only slightly.
“Oh.”

Summary
Frank kept waiting for things to work themselves out. Like, somehow someone would show up at the ED and retrieve him from the pits of despair. Like the world would correct itself because Frank Langdon was not meant to be in a hospital that saw twelve patients per day with no wife, no kids, and absolutely no friends at all.
Without mincing words, Frank Langdon was entirely, undeniably at rock bottom.

Summary
Carmy ran warm. She saw him strip himself of his woolen jacket and brave Midwestern cold with bare arms and miraculously be without any goosebumps more times than she could count. He surely didn’t need the fuzzy packets of warmth, but he had them. Undoubtedly, he had them for her. Sydney would complain about her constant cold fingers and dry knuckles often, she shouldn’t have been surprised Carmy wasn’t just listening but cataloging the facts about her into some place in his brain. And yet—
It made her ache, to be thought of like that.
Or, when Carmy and Sydney finally start dating, everyone knows. Everyone, that is, except for Sydney.
