The blinding, burning light was there again, still tearing into his retinas like a blender. But the voice that spoke his name now wasn’t his mother’s and it definitely wasn’t Bruce. The voice rattled him down to his bones, inspiring a kind of fear Duke only reserved for some of Gotham’s fiercest Rogues. Duke could hear the sheer power behind the voice despite there being nothing to indicate this was more than another nightmare.
“Wake up.”
Duke’s eyes snapped open.

Ever since Duke presented as an omega, life has been different. Not bad, per se, just...weird. Especially with his friends. Call it the detective in him, but there's something going on with them whether they themselves know it or not. There are moments that seem to hang on information that's not repeated out loud. Like missing parts of an overheard phone call.
As he often does when met with a new variable, Duke observes, analyzes, and adjusts accordingly.

“You’re pathetic,” Damian spits, jabbing his elbow back into the soft flesh of Tim’s stomach, grinning at the low wheeze that gets him. Tim grabs a fistful of hair, and gives up on trying to be coordinated. They’re not sparring, and even if they were, Damian is slippery as an eel, worming out of any pin Tim throws at him. “Did you think you could—hah—comfort me.” He sneers at him between panted breaths, and Tim feels his pulse rise, feels the words sink into his skin and burn. “That we would commiserate? Us two forsaken?”
Tim splits his knuckles on Damian’s teeth. Damian’s smile turns bloody.

Tim Drake hospitalized for chemical exposure. The Riddler’s warehouse explosion? Dick Grayson, ‘parkour mishap.’ Scarecrow’s gas attack? Damian Wayne—”
“—was poisoned by a salad,” Bruce interrupted, with the calm confidence of a man who’d rehearsed that line before.
Marcia blinked. “…A salad.”
“Yes,” Bruce said, utterly deadpan. “Kale. Terrible stuff.”
Or, the Gotham Gazette runs a full feature on Wayne family injury excuses. Tim Drake “sleepwalked” into a rooftop katana fight. Jason Todd “fell into a historical reenactment.” Duke Thomas glows. The reporter loses her mind.

Duke braced himself, bringing his fists up in front of him and preparing to dodge or lose an eye.
The guy swung. The hit never landed.
A gunshot cracked the night wide open, and the guy who’d been about to slice up Duke’s face screamed, clutching at his hand. The sound was pure agony.
Blood sprayed, hot and wet, across Duke’s cheek and hoodie. Too close. Too real. His breath hitched hard, stomach lurching. Some hit his lip. The metallic tang of blood slid into his mouth before he could stop it. He gagged.
