Series is intended to be read as a sort of alternative canon AU. Parts that are/were written out of order have been rearranged chronologically, but you can read them in any order (or not at all). "I wrote them down on the page, didn’t I?" Lister leant out of his bunk and swiped out a hand to snatch his application back, but Rimmer stepped just out of reach.
"‘Hobbies and interests include,’" he read aloud, gripping the paper so tightly that the edges were starting to crinkle, "‘learning foreign languages’? Lister, you barely speak English."

Patches is more than he seems, though not just because he enjoys tricking unsuspecting Undead into the assortments of traps he's laid throughout Lordran. No, Patches's true goal is to punish the gluttons, those who take more than they need and usually at the expense of others. To fulfill this role, he himself abstains from wanting of any kind. Riches, delicacies, even vanity, he's resisted it all. The want for companionship and affection, however, is a much harder desire to ignore.
