    Dick… is aware. He’s aware that he’s not doing well. He’s aware that Tim isn’t doing well. Hell, he’s aware that Alfred isn’t doing well.

    What with Bruce being… well…

    He’s aware.

    But, as he stares at his little brother telling him that Bruce is alive, he can’t help but feel anything but relief. In fact, he feels a lot of bad feelings about it, and then very quickly adds guilt to those bad feelings since he can’t think of anything positive to say.

    Because he’s aware that he’s not well. And that Tim isn’t well. And that Alfred isn’t well.

    But they weren’t well before Bruce died, either.

    It is halfway through the second period that Shane looks at his phone. He has promised himself he won’t, he also promised Ilya that he won’t look, but the temptation is just too strong. A quick peek, five seconds at most, to just make sure that nothing has come through.

    The second he does, his heart drops so low he thinks he stops breathing. Eight missed calls from Jackie. Fifteen text messages. Three missed calls from Hayden and thirty-two text messages.

    He presses call immediately on Jackie’s number. Hearing two rings before it picks up.

    “Shane! Is Ilya with you?” Jackie sounds like she is snapping- and Jackie never snaps.

    “Yes he is- we are on speakerphone. Uhhh… What is up?” Shane feels stupid. What is up? He desperately wishes it isn’t a dumb question; he didn't read their texts before calling.

    “Hey buddy, I don’t want to freak you out, but we are going to the hospital.” Hayden’s voice cracks through as his worst nightmare.”We are minutes away from Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. I’m so sorry, Shane-”
