    Summary

“We’re in the middle of the desert, waterbender. So you might have that barrel, but once it’s gone, what do you have?” Zuko moved forward, into her personal space. She was shorter than him, and he was using his height deliberately to glare down at her, but Katara didn’t back down. He could feel the sun soaking into him – his power was strongest while she was at her weakest, and for a moment he wished she would start something so that he could beat her in a fight. “I can make fire anywhere, and you might get one shot in, but then I am going to make you burn.”

    The moment dragged out.

    They were glaring.

    Still glaring.

This was the point where the girl would usually be flying away on a bison and he’d be covered in perfume or something.
Something shifted in her expression, and Zuko started fully processing what he had just said, and how it could perhaps have been phrased a little—

Her voice was completely flat. “Make. Me. Burn.” Her mouth tugged, started widening into a sly smile.

His stomach dropped. Oh no. “I meant it like—“

    Summary

The idea zips through her and Katara speaks before she really thinks about it. “You should come to the South Pole with me. And be my fake boyfriend.”

“What?!” Zuko nearly chokes on his own coffee and stares at her with wide eyes.

“It’s perfect! You won’t have to spend the Solstice alone and I won’t have to hear an endless barrage of comments from my family about me being lonely forever!”

    Summary

“Do you think he’s single?” Suki asked Katara one night, raising a brow at her.

    “Who?” Katara asked.

“You know who. The hot guy in the booth.” Suki’s blue eyes searched Katara’s face for a glimmer of something.

Katara’s heartbeat picked up speed as she reflexively glanced toward the back of the shop, where the booth in question sat blissfully empty.

“Suki, you’re quite literally a lesbian,” Katara said drily, fiddling with the pendant around her neck.

The other girl laughed, shaking her head. “Not for me, Katara,” Suki replied, brow still raised as if Katara were missing something important. “Plus I’m gay, not blind.”

[Or: Zuko is a regular at the boba shop where Katara works while a junior in college. After a few chance encounters that leave Katara blushing and in denial, Zuko continues putting himself in awkward social situations on the off chance he might see her again.]

    Summary

After their mission to confront the man who hurt Katara’s mother, Zuko and Katara return to Ember Island with more than just closure—they return tethered to something neither of them expected: each other.

Haunted by nightmares, Katara begins sleeping beside Zuko for comfort, and to their surprise, neither of them can seem to sleep without the other anymore. They keep their closeness secret, unsure what it means, while the rest of the gang watches their growing intimacy with suspicion, amusement, and, in Aang’s case, jealousy.

Set during a canon-adjacent lull before Sozin’s Comet, Zuko and Katara wrestle with the weight of their pasts, the uncertainty of their future, and the strange, fierce comfort they find in one another.
