Summary
His mutter had scared him often as a child, coming home still high, with bruises scattered all over her body, eyes glassy and unseeing. She never wanted to be touched, would always reject his clumsy attempts at seeking affection or giving comfort. So instead, he would climb on the kitchen counters to reach the cabinets with his favorite snacks—animal crackers and juice boxes—and bring her one of each. He remembers the way her eyes would focus, then, when he held them out to her with a quiet, “Here, Mama. For you.” She would look at him, and for just a moment, she would see him—her child, her son, the baby she had brought into the world already addicted to heroin and dangerously underweight—and the awfulness of it all would dawn on her. He didn’t understand then why she would whisper apologies to him until she got distracted by the drugs in her system once again, but he does now. When he closes his eyes, he can still feel the ghost of her lips pressed against his forehead and her hand cupping his cheek, because the only time she could stand to touch him was when she was overwhelmed by guilt.

Summary
“Ghost, it’s Soap. Come in.”
No response.
“Lieutenant, it’s Sergeant MacTavish—requesting urgent assistance.”
Still no response.
“I canna get into the daft fucking computer, Ghost!” Soap hissed, frustration taking hold of him for a brief moment. When nothing but static greeted him, he groaned. He must have been too far underground to reach his teammates. Bloody shite.
“I can tell you the password,” a tiny, high-pitched voice said. Soap’s gaze flickered to the faerie’s cage, to see that she’d flown closer to the bars again, and was holding onto them tightly as she stared directly at him. She smiled, and her little, round face with those big, brown doe eyes looked so very innocent, so very friendly. She seemed happy to help, and why wouldn’t she be? She was a nice faerie, a kind faerie, so generous…

Summary
“Mama,” he gasps, wrapping his arms around you and burying his face in your breasts again to hide the way he’s tearing up. You know. You know how disgusting he is, his twisted desires, and you’re using them against him, cruelly playing with him… but he can’t help but beg for more. Anything to keep you touching him, to keep you speaking to him in that soft, condescending tone of voice, the same one his mother would use on the rare occasions she deigned to speak to him during her infrequent visits. The voice that makes him feel two feet tall and his cock weep. “Bitte, Mama, bitte. Es tut mir leid. Es tut mir so leid. Bitte, vergib mir, bitte, liebe mich, liebe mich, bitte!”

Summary
The loneliness was killing him. He was already dead and somehow it was killing him. For every day that passed with only the other undead for company, Simon’s voice grew more and more quiet. He was desperate. Desperate for an anchor to the humanity that kept slipping through his cold, stiff fingers.

Summary
“They say the Ghost has no heart,” the soldier says, casual like he’s just come back from an evening stroll instead of a torture session. Without breaking eye contact, he taps the tip of his knife, still wet with Johnny’s blood, against the one-way glass, leaving behind a smear of crimson. “But I do not think that is true. I think I have found the Ghost’s heart, and I have strung it up like meat from butcher. Right. There.”
The man smiles, close-lipped and unassuming, and that disturbs Ghost more than any grin with too many sharp teeth ever will.
“It is pretty heart. Very pretty. But like butcher, I will carve it up in front of you if you do not tell me what I want to know."

Summary
Tomorrow, Soap would force himself to be awake at six. He’d be ready, sitting on the stoop, a cup of coffee in one hand and his rifle in the other.
And when he shot Ghost dead, he’d plant thistle in the viscera he left behind.
Ten years after surviving a gunshot wound to the head, Soap is struggling with the reality of retirement and the abrupt, seemingly unprompted reappearance of his ex-lover and former lieutenant. But healing isn't linear, and sometimes things need to shatter and break before they can be built back up anew.
