    Summary

Charles scoffs. “You literally insisted on walking in front of me. If someone sprang a trap, it was you.”

“No, no, no, ghostie. The writing on that little faery lock says that this is a trap for ghosts; the gate only seals if a ghost walks into it.”

    “...Oh.”

Thomas makes eye contact, and smirks in an exaggerated manner that flashes one of his canines. He tops it off with a wink and watches how Charles goes from momentarily deflated right back to petty narrowed eyes and ever constant pacing.

He doesn't stop or bother with eye contact again to say, “so.. what's the plan? Can you dispel it?”

“Well there certainly seems to be a way for the gate to open…” Thomas stalks around to be behind Charles, leaning over him by the shoulders to murmur into his ear suggestively. “If you're willing to swallow your pride and do what needs to be done.”

    Summary

Niko was gone (had been gone, continued to be gone) for over nine months. Charles was there, but he was not. He was always with Crystal now, and never meeting Edwin's gaze. And Edwin was so alone he couldn't stand it.

"Edwin's hands stilled and his eyes focused on a spell entitled To conjure a shadow version of one who is lost. The warnings were longer than the spell. He had read no more than three lines before Edwin knew he was not using this spell to bring back Niko. The warnings explicitly stated that this shadow version was not linked to the person you had lost. It was an entirely new being, created from the spell caster and their memories of the missing person. Edwin would not attempt to build a new version of Niko. There was no way he could ever recreate her smile, her laugh, the things only she would say. He could never be what she was. He would not insult her memory by trying.

But he was not thinking about Niko.

All he could picture was Charles.

He knew, in every logical part of himself, that it would not be real. But it might be enough."

    Summary

Edwin can feel eyes on him as soon as he steps through the cupboard door; this might have been a mistake, letting Charles talk him into something this daring. He tries tugging the shorts down and then his sleeves, to no avail, though. He knows that in this day and age this length is considered appropriate, but he still feels too exposed. Straightening his back, he fixes his gaze on Charles, who still hasn't said anything, who is no longer even looking at him.

Or: Edwin wears something new, and Charles can't keep his hands off any longer.

    Summary

It had been a quiet week. Even though ghosts could not feel the temperature of anything that was not supernatural in nature, business still reliably slowed down every summer - and the current heatwave was, of course, no exception.

So Charles and Edwin had the place all to themselves. They'd closed early and sent the girls home, who'd been drooping on the small office sofa like a pair of flowers that had wilted in the heat.

But the two boys weren't affected by the weather like that. They just had the rest of the day off to enjoy themselves.

When the boys close shop early, Charles takes care of Edwin, and then himself.
