    Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.

     

    In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.

    “Alright, I need everyone to fess up. Who wrote this?” Hayden swings a spiral-bound notebook around. “I know only 4 of you can even read.” It’s too early in the fucking day for this.

    JJ steps in behind him, crossing his arms menacingly. “Tell us before we start making assumptions.”

    “What’s going on now,” Shane grumbles.

    The rest of the team remains silent. They're not particularly good at silence; Berkes drops his jock, which falls to the ground with a solid thunk that echoes off of the walls. Renaud coughs (open mouth, not even attempting to over it with his elbow. Disgusting).

    Hayden passes Shane the notebook and reads the first page.

    “Hollander husband theories?” Shane reads, voice taking a shrill note near the end.

    “Theories about who your husband is,” Mitty supplies helpfully. Three guys smack him.

    Shane sighs. “And are you all betting on this?”

    He keeps staring at the drawing framed above the free weights.

    Shane made it in kindergarten. Mom kept it for years and years because she keeps things like that. She had it framed and gave it to Shane right before the start of rookie camp, when it was official, and he’d sign his contract the next day, the maximum allowed for an entry-level contract under the CBA: $900,000, plus $2.85 million in signing and performance bonuses.

    Shane always thought it was a silly thing to hang on to. The drawing is pretty mediocre, even for a five-year-old. It’s a stick figure with brown crayon-jab eyes and black, slashed spikes of hair, too-long arms outlined in blue and red, holding an oblong attempt at the cup. There’s a floating check-mark stick, and the legs end in gray, outward-pointing blocks, which he assumes are supposed to be skates. And above it all, blocky and backward-lettered: MY FUTURE.

    Shane tweaks Ilya’s big toe. “Shut up. So I thought I should introduce myself. And when I watched you practice, or with your team, yeah, you were always laughing, but I thought—well. I was lonely, being so much…better. Than everyone else. And then I saw you standing by yourself, and I thought. Maybe you were lonely, too.”

    chose two portions to highlight bc this fic was that good. the last chapter brought me to TEARS.. also a great shane AND ilya character study because i can never LOSEEEE

    Ilya doesn’t remember his mother’s voice anymore, not really, but when he tries to imagine it, it always sounds a lot like Svetlana. Lilting; light; ragged, just a bit, on the edges. Svetlana’s hair tickles Ilya’s chin, and he closes his eyes and lets the tears slip silently down his face as Svetlana talks to him, quietly, in Russian.

    “Ladies and gentlemen and Mom and Dad!” Ruby bellows, standing up on the little stool Ilya set out for her, “We are gathered here today to say goodbye to Ilya’s broken leg.”

     

    “Wooooo!” Jackie cheers, shaking a sparkly black pom-pom, as ill-fitting for the occasion as it is perfect. Ruby only glares a little.

     

    “Ilya was an okay patient some of the times,” Jade says, sharing the little stage with her sister, “Because he never really liked to do his exercises that Uncle Shane said were really important, and he said bad words when he stubbed his toe all the time, and he hated the thing he was supposed to put on it to make it not get wet in the shower.”

     

    “That thing was a torture device,” Ilya grumbles.

     

    “But he always let us color whatever we wanted on it, and he got to come over to play with us a lot, and Jade had the coolest show and tell in the whole class when she showed everybody his crutches,” Ruby half improvs/half-reads, because Ilya knows there’s like, three words total on her “script”, all in one big, long breath.

     

    “So even though Arthur bunked his head on it lots and lots, and it had a weird smell when he doctor sawed it off today,” Jade’s nose wrinkles in remembered disgust. “We really loved Ilya’s cast because it made him all better.”

    i could not stop crying at this entire fic. like an instant boost of serotonin in a fic. no because sometimes (1) socially awkward hockey player makes a best friend, and that ends up helping make a family for the love of his life. anyway.

    “No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”

    “Go fuck yourself.”

    Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.

    And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?

    This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.

    It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

He feels kinda bad about it, because he's missing Joe's routine, but he can catch it on exhibition day before camp ends. “Joe's my friend, yeah,” he says. “But you're my best friend. I think I'd like being friends with you the most even if I had a million other friends.”

    Gotham may be cold and dirty and dark and unwelcoming and by all means a terrible city, but in the time he has spent here, he has grown fond of it. Damian likes Gotham. He likes jumping from rooftop to rooftop and coaxing stray cats into his lap and buying food from cozy restaurants with kind, old cashiers and tasting American pastries. He likes strolling through the streets amidst seas of people that hardly even glance at him. He likes the feeling of freedom, of being able to go anywhere without the overwhelming weight of responsibility pressing on his shoulders.

    He likes being with Grayson, with all his kind smiles and carefree laughter and the infectious feeling of happiness that he emits.

    Damian likes Gotham, and he likes Grayson.

    this is literally what love is. adopting and finding your baby brother assassin and taking him in like he was a kind of street cat.
