Summary
“Mello!”
You jolt awake, gasping a little. “What?”
“It’s Amane,” says Matt, letting go of your shoulder. You blink hard to orient yourself as he leans in to lay the back of his hand over your forehead. “You alright? You’re burning up.”
No I’m not, you don’t say, it’s freezing in here. The light from his array of computer screens dances across his goggles. You think of dog eyes, glowing green in the dark.
Matt and Mello witness Misa have a nightmare.

Summary
Near sits. The plastic chair is deeply uncomfortable; he reaches up and tugs at his hair, trying to cancel out the sensation. Still Beyond says nothing.
Well. He’s always been a fan of the direct route.
“Nice to meet you, Beyond Birthday,” he says. “I’m L.”

Summary
It's not as dramatic as he would like it to be. There's no scare chord, no dark aura, no sharp ozone. The names and lifespans are just — there, as ordinary a part of his field of vision as the sky. The numbers don't make sense, or at least they shouldn't, but he looks and he knows what they mean. He's known since the day he was born. Wammy selects for prodigies, after all.
(Beyond Birthday, before.)

Summary
Once Misa’s fixed the puffiness around her eyes — allergies, ugh — she steps out of the bathroom to find that the table’s already cleared.
“Did you throw it all away?” she asks.
“Obviously,” Light says. “It’s gone bad.”
Misa is pretty sure dissolving into sand isn’t what people mean when they say food has gone bad, but it’s a reassuring lie. A kind lie, because Light is kind. “Okay,” she says. “I ordered sushi.”
Or: Almost two months after L, Watari, and Rem have been eliminated, the Amane-Yagami residence on Christmas Eve begins to exhibit symptoms of being haunted by some sort of ghost.
It’s not Rem, obviously. Rem’s dead. Rem’s dead. Rem’s dead.

Summary
Misa isn’t looking at her. She’s staring the candle down as she says: “I wish Ryuzaki lets my boyfriend go since he’s not Kira.”
“Light-kun is free to go at any time,” L says. “He is staying here of his own volition. Make another wish.”
Or: In a universe only slightly to the left, Misa remembers L’s real name in the forest. This means Light can kill him immediately.
Right?
