Hizashi somehow looks even more exhausted. “You do know how many times you’ve ever been to the hospital, right?” he asks. Without waiting for a reply, he holds up his free hand with his thumb tucked to his palm. “Four times since becoming a hero. Four times in fourteen years, Shouta.”
“...So?”
“‘So’ — “ Hizashi lets his hands fall into his lap and just stares at the ceiling. “You hate hospitals.”
“I know.”
“So you only go when it’s serious.”
Or
After getting essentially a false alarm about Shouta being in the hospital, Shouta and Hizashi have a talk. They decide that after being heroes for as long as they have, maybe it's time for a change.

Summary
“My foster parents, uh,” Hizashi whispers, still not facing him, “they told me how my parents died.
“They said it was my fault.”
Immediately Shouta sucks in a breath, shocked that anyone would say that to a child — to Hizashi. “That’s horrible!”
Hizashi shakes his head. “I’ve been told that for as long as I remember being in the foster system,” he says. “The reason why I ended up there was because I lost control of my quirk and that killed my parents.”
Shouta works up the courage to ask why Hizashi doesn't open up about his family to him, and is shocked to learn what Hizashi's been told this whole time. Unable to believe what Hizashi's foster parents have been telling him, he finds a way for Hizashi to learn the truth about what happened.

“Oh…” He yawns, settling more into the pillows while angling his body so that Shouta can access him fully. “I guess we can have sex, but I can't promise I'll be able to do much.”
“That sounds nice,” Shouta says, his fingers beginning to work at the buttons on Hizashi's shirt, “but that's not quite what I mean.”
Hizashi hums in confusion. “Then why are you getting my shirt off?”
“Because,” Shouta gets the last button undone and pushes the fabric to the side, “I'm hungry.”

Hizashi's done breastfeeding their daughter for the night, but there's someone else that's looking for some milk.

Shouta grins with all his teeth, his golden eyes glowing bright even as his gray skin grows darker. “I’m teasing,” he says, an arm sliding around Hizashi and dipping towards his tails, one hand brushing lightly over the soft fur. “I remember what today is.
“It’s your birthday.”

Summary
It’s not surprising to see someone walking by on the sidewalk just outside the building, a very pretty someone, in fact.
What’s surprising is that they make eye contact.
There’s a full beat in which they just stare at each other, both of their eyes widening, and it gives Shouta enough time to take in some quick features. Long blonde hair that’s pulled back into a ponytail, bright green eyes behind a pair of glasses, a well-loved leather jacket, a mustache – Shouta immediately changes “pretty person” in his head to “pretty man” upon seeing it.
Then, the beat passes, the pretty man smiles – which only makes him look prettier – raises one hand to wiggle his fingers at him in a little wave, winks -
And then he’s gone.

Shouta starts getting a daily visitor during lunch in the form of a pretty, blonde haired stranger that likes to flirt with him for the few seconds that it takes to pass by his window. Neither of them exchange words for months. Somehow, they still manage to fall in love.

It’s not the first time, Hizashi, he reminds himself gently, and it probably won’t be the last. With that, he opens his eyes again to look at Aizawa. Seeing his sleeping face, he reaches out to carefully, gently brush some of his hair away from his face.
"Guess this is it, huh?" he whispers, feeling his eyes burn. "Our first meeting was our last."
The backs of his fingers brush against Shouta's cheek, and then Hizashi pulls away.
Time to let go of something he was never lucky enough to have.

“I like to build pillow forts during my pajama parties,” Hizashi says.
“You haven’t built one in years,” Shouta says.
“Well we haven’t had a pajama party in years!” is the quick retort, the smile returning to Hizashi’s face. “That’s obviously why!”

Hizashi comes homes with some matching pajamas for the family, Eri doesn't know what a pajamas parties or pillow forts are, and Shouta loves his family very, very much.

All too soon the show is over, Yamada with a light sheen of sweat visible from where he sits as he waves to the cheering crowd, and Shouta’s heart pounds in his chest. The intention was for Nemuri to drop him off back at his apartment when the event was over, but…
He turns to look at her, and she’s looking at him with confused amusement, her drink long empty and the plates of food mostly cleared.
“...Can you take me to my workshop?”

Shouta, struggling with artist's block, goes out with Nemuri to some show she's gotten tickets to. To his surprise, he finds the answer to all his problems right there up on the stage in the form of one Yamada Hizashi. Driven by his inspiration, he reaches out to the musician to see if the man is willing to model for him.
Hizashi is not prepared for what modeling entails, but he finds he likes it anyways.

Summary
With each passing day he feels more and more on edge, more and more alone. The house suddenly feels much, much too big for himself, much too quiet. He turns on movies and music to simulate noise, but all it does is cause him headaches - quickly he turns everything off again, but then he’s just back with the quiet.
Shouta drags his blankets into his parents bedroom, where their scents are the strongest, and makes a nest on their bed, right where their scents mingle together in the middle of the mattress. It’s warm there, and at least because he kept the door closed the scents hadn’t faded as much, but even here they're not as strong as they should be.
Days drag by, the loneliness eating at him, and it becomes harder and harder and harder to sleep.
Or
Shouta didn't realize how much being on his own for the first time without his family would affect him. When Hizashi expresses concerns about his grade dipping and needs help to study, he jumps at the opportunity to have someone else in the house, if only for a bit.

Hizashi looks at him with pleading eyes. “Please, Shouta?” he begs, and there’s a warble to his voice that both makes him sound pathetic and plucks hard on Shouta’s heartstrings. “You’re the only one I trust to watch over me during this. You’re, like, my good luck charm or something.”
…Well, shit.
He takes another long slurp of his coffee, scowling down at the curse removal kit the whole time. He finally shakes his head and goes back to the coffee pot. “I’m going to need more coffee for this,” he grumbles, and out of the corner of his eyes he can see his friend perk up. “Let’s go ahead and make another pot.”
He’d do just about anything for Hizashi, wouldn’t he? The bastard is lucky he loves him.

Hizashi thinks he has a Bad Luck Curse on him and asks for Shouta's help making sure nothing goes wrong as he tries to remove it at home. Shouta thinks everything will be fine, until suddenly nothing is.

“You don’t need to be in control all the time,” Shouta says, voice firm in a way that he hasn’t heard in a little while. It makes something warm spread through Hizashi’s chest, makes him bow his head a little bit while also straightening his back. “Now, go be a good boy for me and take a shower, all right?”
Hizashi nods, mind already latching onto Shouta’s tone. “Yessir.”
“I’ll have your things ready for you when you get out.”

Hizashi's been busy lately, and Shouta wants to help him unwind by allowing both of them to indulge in some soft, sweet pet play that neither of them have been able to in a while.

He chuckles behind a hand when the bright orange hearing aids slip into place for the first time and Hizashi blurts out for him to say something, not even waiting for the doctor to help him turn the things on. They’re not on yet, he signs to him, and Hizashi goes pink in the cheeks when he turns his head to see an amused doctor shaking his head beside him. Watching Hizashi be helped to find the little buttons on the sides, his fingers moved to the buttons so that he can remember where they are, is adorable, especially with the way Hizashi sticks his tongue out in concentration.
Then they get turned on for the first time, anxiety making Hizashi tense up in preparation for hearing for the first time, and Shouta leans forward to ask him, “How do they fit?”
The look of wonder on Hizashi’s face, how his eyes light up, his mouth drops open in awe, his entire body goes slack as the nerves rush out of him all at once, will stay with him forever.

Hizashi gets hearing aids and hears for the first time.

The roof before anything else needs to be repaired before it rains - and this region is known for rain falling in the middle of the summer - and the windows need to be replaced. The foundation should be double checked to make sure none of the supports are rotting. He knows he spotted some loose and broken floorboards inside, and he doesn’t even know if he has running water or electricity.
But it’s his and away from everyone he knows.
Shouta feels safe for the first time in much, much too long.

Needing to get away from his past, Shouta buys up a little, run-down home in the mountains far away from the big city. He's not expecting to meet Hizashi, a man with a big garden and bright smile. He surprises himself when they become friends.

Summary
He wants what he’s seen from a distance, that companionship that the happy pairs in other shoals seem to have, or the ones he’s occasionally seen when he and Shouta make trips to the colony. It looks - nice. It looks like something he wants, that closeness that comes from the bond.
The days pass with him trying to figure out how to tell him, how to ask, and in that time the only indication of his feelings is the unintentional fanning of his fins whenever Shouta’s around. The deep-sea mer doesn’t seem to notice - or maybe he does, but Hizashi has to remind himself that he likely just doesn’t know what fanning means.
Then the ocean decides to help things along, likely tired of him swimming in circles, by sending him something he hasn’t had in months.
His first heat since swimming away from the reef finally hits.

Hizashi's heat finally hits, and feelings come out into the open for the both of them.

“Perhaps it’s less the food, Yamada Hizashi,” Aizawa says, gently taking the glass from him and resting the glass carefully down so that it doesn’t fall, “and more to do with the fact that you can’t take that muzzle off. Not by yourself.”

“Really?” One of those rough hands comes up to trail along the side of the muzzle, the heat felt through the holes of the lace-like metal, and Hizashi’s heart thumps. Fingers trail along the bands on the sides, past his ear and into the loose weave of his braid. “Then you have the key to the lock back here?”
A finger taps on where the lock is carefully hidden in his hair.

They meet at a gala, where a mysterious Aizawa Shouta tells stifled and muzzled Yamada Hizashi to get out and away from what he's about to do. When Hizashi finds out a few days later that his family - the ones that forced the muzzle on him and caused him a lifetime of pain - has been murdered, he finds himself thankful and wishing to meet the man again.
Lucky for him, they do.

Hizashi’s face twitches down into a scowl. “Why do you ask?”
Another brush of those claws, this time just a little higher and getting behind his ear. He wants to roll his head back into it, neck feeling like it doesn’t want to keep his head up. “I’ve noticed you’ve been in a,” Shouta pauses, “mood these past few days.”
He huffs, fingers drumming on his scales. “Just been feeling off,” he mutters. “Nothing’s really wrong.”

Hizashi's been feeling unusually aggressive lately, and normally Shouta wouldn't mind - he finds the reef mer very cute when he's mad - but not this time. Hizashi...finds he likes it when Shouta snaps.

Hizashi pauses.
…That can’t be right.
“I’m sorry,” Hizashi says slowly, “did you just say ‘mers’?”
Shouta squints an eye open at him. “...Yes?”
Hizashi flails, arms pinwheeling in the water, and flops backwards out of the coil and onto the sand floor in his shock.

Shouta comes back from one of his hunting trips, and Hizashi learns that deep-sea mers can tend towards cannibalism. The two of them have a talk about that.

“Hizashi,” Shouta murmurs, keeping his voice low, “why don’t you go on ahead of me.”
Hizashi stops in his story about the octopus and the swordfish, blinking at him. “...Why?”
He reaches into his sack, pulling out a handful of lava rocks and handing them to Hizashi. “You know what medicines we need to pick up, right?” he asks. When Hizashi nods, he gently pushes him away. “Then I’ll catch up with you in a bit.”
“But - Shouta - “
“I’ll be right behind you.”
Green eyes flicker between his for a long moment, no longer smiling, before he huffs and swims away, tail flicking in agitation.
Shouta sighs, then turns to face the guards, tired.
“Can I help you?” he asks, keeping his voice neutral once they’ve approached.

They've run low on supplies and Hizashi needs something to help him move in the semi-depths without freezing his tail off, so they make the journey to the closest colony to stock up. Shouta gets a reminder of why he normally stays well away from others - but Hizashi's there to tell him that he'll stick by his side.

Summary
Reef mers do not eat meat, and thus the small amount of kelp he had on hand did not last long, especially for an already hungry mer.
Shouta knows that it’s not anyone’s fault. He did not prepare extra food because he never does; he does not ever have company. It is not Hizashi’s fault for being hungry. It is not either of their faults that he came while exhausted and alone. Despite all this, it still does not help him feel like he needs to take responsibility.
He blames the stupid alpha in him that’s clawing to provide for the hungry omega.
Or
Hizashi's still recovering from his time alone, and Shouta's run out of food that the reef mer can safely eat. He takes it upon himself to travel the leagues to get him some more.
