The man who stands in the front entryway is nothing like Zhuo Yichen once imagined.
He’s wearing a soft gray turtleneck; a long white scarf drapes down his front on each side, not wrapped around his neck for warmth. His hair falls to the back of his neck, bangs parted in the middle to just touch his cheeks. Thin-rimmed glasses rest on his nose, giving him the look of a respectable, relaxed professor. He has a single earring in one ear that glints as he smiles, warm and disarming; practiced.
He doesn’t look at all like someone that burned their offices down and forced Zhuo Yichen’s brother to leave the profession eight years ago.

The previous night, Feng Xin had asked for his help picking an outfit for some unspecified event. Mu Qing was confused by the request because Feng Xin had never asked him for fashion advice before. Actually, Mu Qing is pretty sure he’s never seen the man wear anything but sweatpants and hoodies, and he’s not sure how well those can be styled. Curiosity got the better of him and he agreed to help. He regretted it almost immediately when he saw what kind of clothes he was choosing from. It was all formal, dress wear.
His heart lurched realizing Feng Xin was undoubtedly asking him for help picking an outfit for a date. When had Feng Xin planned on dating? In all the years he’s known Fen Xin, he’s never once seen him go out on a date. Feng Xin can barely be in the same room with a woman. There’s no way he’d be able to have a relationship with one. He knows Feng Xin has only dated one girl and that was when he wasn’t around to see it.

Intact.
Mu Qing didn’t realize… didn’t see how bad it had become. Preoccupied with the mess of fibers left behind for him to clean up, he didn’t think to look at the thread that shed them and how little of it was left.
He stands frozen in space, remembering the vitality of the thread as it once was, blind to how it had already lost its strength.
Minutely, Feng Xin’s back begins to tremble. His shoulders shudder in broken, fractured remnants of breath. What remains of the thread— Mu Qing witnesses the snap with a soft, shaken sob.
“Mu Qing,” Feng Xin’s voice trembles, hushed, “Just… kick me out. Let me freeze to death.” -
