It had been a gradual, but steady progression. When Belgium had decided to take you in—willingly, of course—she had thought that you would have been far more ingracious and possibly even rebellious. Even other Nations had said that her mothering nature could be smothering at times, which would not have fostered a healthy relationship should Belgium pursue it.

With you, Belgium did neither see nor feel as if you were faking your comfort when you were with her. In fact, it was the direct opposite. Instead of finding you sulking or expressing emotions of the negative kind, you were compliant. Willing, even.
