Summary
“We get out of the room. We stay together. We don’t answer the phone.”
“And we don’t split up.”
On a road trip gone very wrong, Buck and Eddie must stop for the night at The Four Aces, a beautiful, impossible motel in the middle of the desert that seems to know exactly how to hurt them. As hallways stretch, rooms shift, and phones ring with familiar voices, the motel begins weaponizing everything they refuse to say: Buck’s fear of being useful but not chosen, Eddie’s guilt and repression, and the life they’ve built together without ever naming it.
The only way out is through — and this time they have to go together.

Summary
“Would you marry me?”
Eddie stared at him.
Buck stared back.
The refrigerator hummed. The monitor hissed faintly. Eddie could hear his own pulse, which seemed dramatic and unhelpful.
“What?” Eddie said.
Buck looked down, then back up. “Not like. I mean, legally. For Theo. For the stability thing.”
Eddie’s mouth had gone dry.
Buck kept talking. He did that when he was nervous. Built a whole staircase of words and then tried to jump down it. “I know it sounds insane. I know. And I’m not asking because I’m freaking out. I mean, I am always a little bit freaking out, but that’s not why. I’m asking because if I had to pick someone to have legal standing with Theo, someone who already shows up and knows him and knows me, it would be you.”
Eddie said nothing.
Buck’s face tightened. “You can say no.”
“I know.”

Summary
“You’re not my dad Buck so stop acting like it!,” Chris yelled, chest heaving at the admission.
Buck felt his whole life flash before his eyes before he corrected his posture, stance tall, shoulders back, face neutral.
“You’re right, I’m not your dad, but I’m still in charge of you until he gets home. He said you weren’t allowed to go to the party on a school night, and I passed along the message. If you have a problem with it, take it up with him when he gets home in twenty minutes,” Buck said calmly, leaving Chris’s room, closing the door behind him.
Or. Buck gets into an argument with Chris and flees to visit Bobby’s grave. Eddie follows him to bring the man that he loves back home.

Summary
Coming out is a scary prospect. Especially when you're thirty four, chronically emotionally repressed, and in no uncertain terms deeply in love with your best friend (i.e. the intended recipient of said coming out). And it's with that in mind that Eddie gives himself a rare moment of grace, accepting that maybe it was the colossal weight of this emotional distress, and not his own personal failure that led him to develop his worst idea yet - a practice run.
Or; Eddie practices coming out with his new favorite four-year-old. It doesn't go well, or maybe it goes a little too well.

Bookmarker's Notes
Speaking of which, said four-year-old is staring at him with wide eyes, and something sour suddenly turns in Eddie’s gut. Oh God, Theo’s secretly homophobic, the traitorous thought worms its way into Eddie’s mind. I’m about to get hate-crimed by my favorite toddler.

Summary
“She said she wasn’t worried about us breaking up.”
Oh. Well. That was pretty definitively a thing that people said about partners who were together romantically.
“Say something,” Buck instructed.
“What?”
“Anything,” Buck said, his voice wavering on the word. Which was—it was weird, right? Why was Buck so shaken by a throwaway comment?
Or maybe the better question was why wasn’t Eddie? If either of them was going to get freaked out by the assumption that he was dating a man, it would make more sense for it to be Eddie, who was straight, and not Buck, who had, in fact, already dated men.
“Aren’t you going to be late for your shift?”
-----
Buck and Eddie get shaken up by a comment from Theo’s social worker, and then by a magnitude 7 earthquake; it turns out, some disasters are better than others.

“How are you—”
“Chris!” Eddie yelled, knocking on the window. “CHRIS, wake up, kid!”
“Sure, that works.”
