Summary
After the sealing of the honmoon and the banishment of Gwi-ma, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey return home—physically safe but emotionally shattered. As the city prepares for its annual Lantern Festival, Mira and Zoey try to coax Rumi into joining them in the festivities. They’re hoping the night’s cathartic themes and its overall quiet beauty might help her heal. But Rumi’s past—the hiding, lies, and lingering shame-have left her touch-starved and terrified of the intimacy she so desperately craves.
How does someone begin to heal when the thing they crave the most, what they hunger for the most, is the very thing they can't bear? When the very thought of touch makes one's stomach twist in discomfort? But the lack of touch splinters the heart in two? To crave closeness so fiercely that the longing itself becomes unbearable—yet to recoil, to flinch away, when that longed‑for touch finally comes near. After the long days of mind-numbing debriefings, Captain Kathryn Janeway was finally able to leave Starfleet Command behind and go on a much-needed leave. Her destination – Bloomington, Indiana. Kathryn walked down the concrete paths of Starfleet campus headed to one of the transports that would take her home. In the distance, she saw a tall and slender figure standing under a large maple tree. Kathryn’s lips turned upward in a smile and her body vibrated with anticipation as she approached the woman. “Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”
