Then I went back towards my xenonite. Nah, full grown adult over there— despite being around 30 Earth years old, and if that were converted to Eridian math— that was very young. Pebbles could barely speak yet at that age. But this was an alien— a human we're talking about. Grown ass man.
Or so Rocky thought.

Summary
The alien—Grace—is finally asleep. Or, at least, Rocky thinks he is. He’s curled on his side, tucked away under a covering. Rocky sits on the other side of the alcove the human lies in, fiddling away with one of his many repair projects. Typically, watching another as they sleep is fairly straightforward and uneventful. Not much is needed beyond something to do and to keep a lookout for whoever’s resting.
But Rocky can’t help but focus more on Grace as he rests. He just can’t; the way the human sleeps is, quite literally, otherworldly.

"Rocky is incredibly optimistic. It’s actually one of the traits I like most about the little guy. If there was anyone on earth with even half as much hope and optimism as Rocky, the world would probably be a whole lot better of a place.
I wish I could share that optimism. I try of course, but there's only so much a guy can do on his death bed before it starts to become a bit of a chore to stay happy and hopeful all the time."
Rocky and Grace make it to Erid eventually. The only problem is that Grace never actually thought he was going to live to see it, now he actually has to figure out what to do for the rest of his life.

One day when they're back on Erid, Rocky just gives birth while Grace and him are walking down the street and now there's a whole pack of tiny Eridians crawling around everywhere.
"We must go show Adrian." Even Grace can hear the happy pride in Rocky's voice. "And then we must talk." That part's a little more tense.

"What?" Adrian says after a tense moment.
"I can prove it to everyone," Grace says, his heart in his throat. "I'll - I'll make you and Rocky the most celebrated couple on Erid. I promise."
"Stupid human," Adrian hisses. "You would give up your chance for him just like that?"
"Yes," Grace says hoarsely.
"Anything for him."

It was stupid of Grace to believe that Erid had everything all figured out. Despite how good things might seem, he knew better than anyone that sometimes people fell through the cracks, and more often than not, it was the most vulnerable who did. He might think himself a coward, but he will never stop fighting for those who need it most.

Summary
With the impending arrival on Erid comes a whole host of worries. Grace is scared of what awaits him and how his dynamic with Rocky will change, especially because the various symptoms of malnutrition make him a nightmare to be around. Rocky assures him that he’s not going anywhere but Grace isn’t sure he can believe that.
OR:
Grace’s illness makes him stupid. Rocky isn’t sure how he can reassure him, but he tries. And now that they’re on Erid and actually have the resources to treat him, hopefully he’ll get better soon.

Summary
Ever since Grace and Rocky landed on Erid, Rocky has been glued to Grace’s side, refusing to leave him alone. Grace is worried about his friend. Rocky has not even seen his mate more than a handful of times since they arrived. This is, obviously, a problem. He doesn’t want to keep Rocky away from the love of his life.
Grace isn’t as sick anymore. He doesn’t need Rocky at his side all the time. Grace will do what he has to do so that Rocky and Adrian can resume living a normal life together. So what if Grace struggles to be alone? This is for Rocky’s sake. He’ll be okay.
But Grace has severely underestimated how much he needs Rocky, and how much Rocky needs him.

“Uh. Depends on the human, I guess,” I say, chest rising and falling as I recover my breath. I wrack my brain for examples. “Exercise, mostly. Like going for a walk, or to the gym—that’s a special building just for exercising. Or, you know you can play sport, go dancing, have sex—”
Rocky perks up at that last word, and I immediately regret it.
