Wise had spiraled them through FTL transit until Gonggong’s route measurements were useless, then dropped them in a stretch of interstellar space Sedna had never seen before. She’d been right about him from the beginning, from the moment she’d watched him whispering with SIMP at the Kingdom’s threshold and felt her suspicion settle into certainty. She’d tracked the route. She’d assigned Gonggong to count. She’d prepared for exactly this. And Wise had prepared for her preparation.
Stars, that was smart. She hated that it was smart.

But Neptune looked up and his whole face transformed from a half-smile into one far more brilliant. A deep dimple appeared in his left cheek, his eyes lighting up, and his humming broke off into a giddy laugh. "Oh! Saturn! I didn't see you there! What a coinky-dink, that we come across each other all the way out here!" He threw his hands out and spun in a quick, full circle, the motion sending the rock tumbling away before he caught it within his gravity, stalling it midway between them. His curls bounced with the movement, and his scarf spiraled behind him like a comet tail. "I'm singing to Guillermo the Second."
"Guillermo the Second?”

Erebus folded his arms over his chest. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Of course you don't. You're very mysterious, Planet W.” Neptune beamed at him. Erebus just rolled his eyes. "The one who spent billions of years alone in the darkness!" He tossed the asteroids back into the line, gravity strengthening briefly as he pushed them into place. "But I really like to think I can be perceptive. It's one of my many talents. Right up there with juggling and also remembering all my moons' names. And Uranus’s!” His eyes narrowed, an expression off enough that Erebus wanted to look away. “And what I am perceptively percepting is that you want to talk to him, and you're too scared to do it."
"I'm not scared of Uranus. And is that a word?”

Saturn gave a sudden, sinuous twist of his hips that caught Erebus genuinely off guard. The world tilted, and suddenly Erebus was the one with his back against the couch cushions, Saturn astride his hips, golden hair falling around their faces like a curtain. “Much better.” He braced his hands against his chest. “The sight of you above me is lovely, but I think I like you here a little bit more. Pinned beneath me.” He rolled his hips in a slow, dragging grind that made Erebus hiss through clenched teeth, blood rushing south so fast it left him dizzy. “Doesn’t it feel nice?”

A sudden feeling woke in the wrist joint of his wings, right where the most obvious break sat. It still looked undeniably wrong, the joint bare of feathers and with a visible knot like an asteroid shoved under the skin. It was where the familiar, grinding ache that promised a bad day started.

He was already close enough if Uranus lifted a hand he could have touched him. He wanted to more than he’d ever admit to anyone.

"No." His teeth ground together. "I'm not okay." No matter what, he still felt wrong. He'd only ever known a Solar System with all of the other planets. How was he just supposed to… live without them? And the Sun—well, the Sun had looked despondent enough that Earth wanted to give him a moment before he tried to talk to him.
And he was going to talk to him.

He groaned as the sound of his name pierced through his repetitive half-dreams of picking up his phone only to realize he’d never actually touched it. “No,” he muttered thickly, his mouth weirdly dry. “Sleep.”
Saturn gave a familiar delighted laugh as the mattress dipped beside him.
“Oh, I think you’ll want to wake up, darling,” he crooned, voice as delighted as his laugh had been. “Don’t you remember what you wanted today?” Uranus frowned into the pillow as his sluggish thoughts swirled, struggling through the haze until they all snapped into place at once and he remembered exactly what Saturn meant.
