And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

Mel’s breath catches in her throat as her heart stutters, her posture straightening as realisation clicks into place. Oh, she thinks, taking another look – a real look – at Samira. Oh. Samira's body is angled completely towards Mel, sheltering her from the rest of the room, blocking her line of sight to the door. Her eyes haven’t strayed away from Mel’s face once, repeating the same triangle of left eye, right eye, mouth. There’s a blush sitting high on her cheeks, a red dusting that’s so subtle that if you didn’t spend each and every day looking at and for Samira Mohan, it’d be easy to miss. Her hand is on the cushion between them, fingers outstretched on the cushion almost in invitation. It brings something to life in her chest, the realisation that maybe Mel wasn’t the only one looking, that maybe after all this time, she’s finally been found.

Al-Hashimi shakes her head as she huffs out a soft laugh. “So what gave me away?” Her eyes travel across Santos’s face, her lips curling at the persistent flush of pink there, whether from the alcohol, or the attention, or both.
Santos purses her lips into a small smile. “You touch my lower back a lot.” She meets Al-Hashimi’s gaze and holds it intently. “When you walk by me.”
“Oh, come on.” She throws her hand in the air. “I do that with everyone.”
“Princess told me that she caught you staring at my ass.” She puts up three fingers. “Three times.”
“Oh my god.” Al-Hashimi leans her forehead into her hand as she shuts her eyes. “Please don’t tell me that’s spread throughout the ED.”

Trinity blurts out, “I wasn’t even sure if we were friends for a long time.”
Mel’s face turns to her fully. As if pulled by something magnetic, Trinity tears her stare away from its spot staring at the door jamb and meets Mel’s hazel eyes. Sees the flecks of gold in them, droplets of sunlight swimming around her blown pupils.
Mel is flushed, pink smatterings over her cheekbones and the point of her nose. Her brows are furrowed like she can’t quite fathom what Trinity has told her. Before Trinity can reel it in, to play it off as a joke, Mel offers a simple, “Of course we are.”

Somehow, she goes from running out the back door of a five-star Italian restaurant to eating pizza in a hole-in-the-wall with Jack, and Samira never expected all of those failed dates to lead to stumbling through her apartment door with Jack as the two of them finally give into the tension they had been struggling to push aside.

Jack knows what it feels like when the world is ending.
The world has ended for Jack Abbot a dozen times over, and the sun still insisted on rising the next day, illuminating the city skyline, warming his tired face, and bringing in a new wave of patients.
That’s the only reason why, when he gets the phone call from Dana, he doesn’t immediately fall apart. He rolls out of bed, pulls on his leg, and returns to the emergency department that he left only four hours ago.
The first words out of Dana’s mouth are "She’s stable", god bless her.

“I switched with Ellis,” She said. “So, you’re stuck with me for the next three days.” Her steps faltered. “Finally?”
“Are you serious? I’ve been trying to poach you from day shift since PittFest.”
“Really?”
“Really.” His response was almost instant. “You were incredible. The IO borehole, the pigtail catheter; I’m going to be talking about that for the rest of my life. Of course I want you for night shift.”
