    Summary

Wei Wuxian didn’t imagine acquiring a cat like this, nor did he imagine acquiring a fluffy white cat that, even covered in dirt and debris and clutched to a four-year-old’s chest like a teddy bear, manages to give the impression it’s judged his entire life and found it deeply wanting.

“Uh, A’Yuan,” he asks slowly, just in case this is a hallucination. “Who’s this?”

“A cat,” A’Yuan says proudly, leaning his round cheek against the top of the cat’s head, while the cat continues to look at Wei Wuxian like he’s wearing week-old clothes covered in food stains.

Or: Wei Wuxian gets a cat, and then a boyfriend, both of which are a surprise.

Wen Qing’s plans had sort of overflowed and they were now facing the construction of a massive medical complex with a hospital wing, medical school wing, and dormitories. Wen Xu wasn’t sure what else was included, but as he was satisfied his cousin had finally let go of her doubts and embraced the typical Wen megalomania with enthusiasm, he wasn’t going to stand in her way.

    Summary

“Oh, and that time I ran away? From the family that had me before the Jiangs took me in? I got hypothermia.” Wei Ying says all of this with the same easy demeanor that he uses when he tells playground stories about Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli, like he’s not discussing trauma. “When you get hypothermia once you’re more susceptible to it in the future, which is a fun side effect.” He shrugs and kisses Lan Zhan’s neck with lips that are still cold but not horribly so. “I just get cold easy now. I’m used to it.”

“Mn,” Lan Zhan says, and means, “We’ll fucking see about that.”

Or: Wei Ying is not allowed to be cold, therefore Lan Zhan must learn to knit.

“Oh, no,” Wen Qing says, trying to sit further upright, finding herself fully pinned down by Egg Tart’s orange bulk, and making up for it with the fire in her eyes. “You do not get to get out of this that easily.”
“A-Qing,” Jiang Cheng tries, and she bulldozes right over him with
    “I was asleep!”
“I said I was sorry!” Wen Qing ignores him.
“It was three in the morning. I had to be up for work at six. I was sound asleep, because I needed to be up at six goddamn am for my shift at the hospital, and this fucker sits up like a jack-in-the-box and wakes me up--”
“I didn’t mean to,” Jiang Cheng complains, quietly.
    “--to announce, at full volume--”
“I don’t know if they need these details--”
“‘I have a crush on Diego Luna!’” Wen Qing says, in a pretty passable Jiang Cheng impression. “At three in the morning! It was urgent that I know! About his crush on Diego Luna!”
“I can’t help that that’s when it hit me,” Jiang Cheng mutters into his pie, so red he’s nearly going purple.
“Good choice though,” Nie Huaisang says, to nods from Wen Ning, Jiang Yanli, and Wei Ying.
“Diego Luna is very attractive,” Wen Ning says, supportively.
“Yes!” Wen Qing says, “Which is obviously why we watched Rogue One for the ninth time before we went to bed!”
“I thought I just liked the movie,” Jiang Cheng says, plaintively. “It’s a good movie!”
“It’s not nine fucking times good, babe!” Wen Qing says, throwing her hands up, pie bowl carefully balanced on the cat. “Which is what I told you!”
“No,” Jiang Cheng says, lifting his chin, “what you told me was, ‘We all have a crush on Diego Luna, go back to sleep, fuckface.’”

    Summary

Wei Ying abandons her suitcase to investigate the sleeping situation, already coming up with a hundred reasons not to inconvenience Lan Zhan by stealing half of her fucking bed, and then gets a better look at it.

It’s huge. Wei Ying has seen a king bed before, and this is bigger than that. Is that a California King? Is that what those huge-ass orgy beds are called? There are parking spaces smaller than this bed. Wei Ying has lived in apartments smaller than this bed.

“You know,” Wei Ying says thoughtfully, “I’ll level with you. I was gonna volunteer to sleep on the couch, or steal some pillows and blankets and sleep in the bathtub, but then I saw this monstrosity. Lan Zhan, look at this fucking bed.”

Lan Zhan rests her hands on the room divider, her face softly amused. “I am looking.”

“We could tend a whole herd of sheep on this bed,” Wei Ying says, warming to her subject. “We could cross the Pacific Ocean and weather any storm on this bed. Fuck, Lan Zhan, I could stage an entire community theatre production of Chicago on this bed.”

Or: There was only one bed, but that part's fine, actually.

    Summary

Wei Wuxian is staring up at the sky, thinking idly about the taste of Emperor’s Smile on his tongue, when Suibian jumps full force onto his stomach and cries, “A-Xian, don’t be mad!”

The sheer force of her pounce knocks the breath out of him. The resulting pause is just long enough for Jiang Cheng, who up to this point has been laying rather peacefully next to him, to shoot up and demand, “Oh great, what did you do now?”

To be fair, the question isn’t exactly unwarranted. Suibian looks an absolute mess: twigs stuck in her fur, dirt smeared across the white fluff of her underbelly. She’s panting up a storm, little heh heh heh gasps that haven’t edged into her normal high-pitched laughter. When her ears press back against her head, she could almost pass for pitiful.

    “Bichen hates me.”

Wei Wuxian’s first thought is Why would Lan Zhan’s daemon hate you?, but it’s followed quickly by remembering exactly where he is, how little trouble he’s caused today, and the fact that he hasn’t seen Suibian for a few minutes.

A grin spreads across his face.

(Or: The most important name a cultivator will ever pick isn’t for their sword. It’s for their daemon.)
