You took your thin, moth-eaten blanket and your canvas sleeping bag that barely cut the wind and made your peace with the snow blowing in under the mosquito netting walls of the tent, ‘cause even though the guys out there in foxholes were huddled together crotch-to-ass with nothing but a fired-to-scorching rifle muzzle to keep them warm, an officer doing the same in the relative safety of a tent made him somewhere between unpatriotic and straight-up queer.
Not that Trapper wasn’t queer. He’d have offered to suck Hawkeye off for that pair of long johns, if looking and acting like a wet dog hadn’t worked. But Frank didn’t get to know that.
