Summary
The dichotomy of the Arkay brothers is as one tries his best to leave his old life behind, the other is trying desperately to bring things back to the familiar way they had always seemed to be. The tragedy, and hope, of this struggle is that you can no more completely erase the past than you can ever return to it.
On parallel pathways, they learn that the world both in and outside of themselves is much more vast and varied than either ever dreamed of. These realizations will irreversibly alter them both, and though they reach out to one another, will they even recognize whomever reaches on either side...

Summary
After escaping the Arena together with three others and connecting with a group who has somewhere safe far away to send them, Ralph believes he’s finally found a family. Found happiness instead of just survival.
But the new life, the promise of freedom, lies across a wide, fast river. And everyone knows vampires can’t cross moving water. (They try to tell Ralph this is a myth, but Ralph knows, Ralph knows and is afraid. Ralph has only survived this long by trusting his fear.)
It would be cruel to make them stay, put them in danger, just for Ralph… and so he tells them to run without him.
He tells them to leave him behind.
Because to believe Ralph could have a family was hubris, to hope is to fly too close to the sun.

Thus he’d solved the case.
