From your observations, you were the only person in the entire circus that seemed to even somewhat tolerate Caine. To you, he was genuinely trying his hardest. He frustrated the living daylights out of you, of course, but you knew that he didn't have the best grasp on the vast spectrum of human emotions - he was merely having to mimic what the others were giving him.
