Three years ago, WWX, who wasn't a bender but invented a terrible way to drift with kaiju, died in a massive kaiju attack on Nightless City. LWJ dreams about him every night. Until one day, a familiar body washes up on the shore.

Love it!!! After a terrible alien war, LWJ retires from the military to become security on a small freighter. There's a lot of adjustment for solitary LWJ, and the other security guy, WWX, drives him up the wall, but slowly LWJ becomes attached: to the crew, to this life, to Wei Ying... Meanwhile, someone else is going to try to reignite war for the sake of profit, and their freighter ends up in just the right place at the right time...
Spoiler: during the war, Wei Ying was re-deployed to Purple Sector right before the Battle of the Bomb, and saw it all happen. He's one of the handful of survivors, by pure chance, and it left a mark.

This is great. I loved the plot, the writing, the worldbuilding. It's never boring. I enjoyed every word. A lot of good thoughts, too, and great reveals as the characters get to know each other over the course of the story.
I will say there are a few points where the Big Bad plot is simple (rushing to "and he confesses to being an evil mastermind in front of everyone" type of thing), but that isn't the central plot so it makes sense it's quick. The scenes themselves aren't bad, just the lack of long-term context / character complexity backing them up. WC and JGS are just slightly more realistic than caricatures.
That's ok, because the focus is LWJ's personal development and the WangXian romance, and that part is excellent. The pacing of the reveals, the growth of the characters, the way everyone in the crew is written: incredibly good. I am def going to reread!

There was a sudden howl outside, a gust against the door that made it rock in its frame. The light was fading fast, and Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but think of all the things that might be in these mountains, supernatural or not.
“Ah what I wouldn’t give for a jar of wine,” he said, speaking over his fear, tamping it down. “Even just ordinary village wine. How will we while away the evening by the fire? I don’t suppose you know any interesting stories.”
“No,” Lan Zhan said, shortly.
“Or campfire songs,” Wei Wuxian mused. “I know you have your guqin, but it isn’t the same. Well, it’ll have to be a game of questions, then.”
He glanced up and over at Lan Zhan, hoping to catch a grimace of dismay. Lan Zhan did not disappoint. Maybe other people wouldn’t have read that slight contraction of Lan Zhan’s perfect features the same way, but Wei Wuxian wasn’t other people. He laughed.
“First question,” he said. “What’s it like being an alpha?”

Wei Wuxian didn’t imagine acquiring a cat like this, nor did he imagine acquiring a fluffy white cat that, even covered in dirt and debris and clutched to a four-year-old’s chest like a teddy bear, manages to give the impression it’s judged his entire life and found it deeply wanting.
“Uh, A’Yuan,” he asks slowly, just in case this is a hallucination. “Who’s this?”
“A cat,” A’Yuan says proudly, leaning his round cheek against the top of the cat’s head, while the cat continues to look at Wei Wuxian like he’s wearing week-old clothes covered in food stains.
Or: Wei Wuxian gets a cat, and then a boyfriend, both of which are a surprise.

The tears rolling slowly down Wang Lingjiao's cheeks should have soothed something in Yu Ziyuan. They didn't. The girl looked pretty crying, and that only made her angrier. Ignore the word count: this fic is interesting in every sentence, a well-crafted story, paced well, keeping the reader constantly engaged. It felt like it flew by.
In a world where the Qishan implodes into war (Wen vs local small sects, so the Wen never invade the jianghu), WWX begins to see the cracks in his home sect: the night hunts they don't take, the unjust punishments, the people lying with a smile or believing wholeheartedly in a system which prioritizes some people over others.
He ends up leaving, becoming a rogue cultivator, and then becoming an adjunct scholar to the Lan for his talismans. All while helping the people. He and LWJ have an epic romance, LQR becomes WWX's staunch supporter (while frowning though, of course), and WWX learns that JFM hid things about his parents and committed ultimate sin against WWX.
In the end, various small clans from Qishan owe their lives to WangXian, NHS learns to cultivate through art, A-Yuan is adopted, Yu-furen is put on trial, JYL's marriage implodes due to her naivete, and JGS's scheming catches up to him.

Fantastic!!
WWX's ghost keeps appearing places. LXC catches him playing Healing for LWJ and playing with A-Yuan at night. JC catches his paperwork being completed for him. And Mianmian gets a message about WQ and WN trapped in Jinlintai.
Turns out, WWX isn't dead at all: he's with BSSR and he's Projecting.
