Usually, it’s simple. Eddie and Buck have been through some things, and that messes with a guy — makes you get stuck in patterns that aren’t good, makes it hard to realize it’s happening. But Eddie and Buck, they know each other. They can see the signs. So they make sure the other has what they need to be okay. If that means pushing some buttons? Well, at least it’s effective.
Buck is not okay. So Eddie does what they do. He pushes those buttons.

“I’m meeting someone who works here,” the guy says. There’s something shifty and irritable about him. Andrew taps an origami frog so that it jumps across the counter in the guy’s direction, just to see if the guy will spook. He doesn’t.
“I work here,” Andrew says. He sits back in his chair, crossing his arms in a way that makes his T-shirt strain across his biceps. The combination is not necessarily suggestive — that’s not Andrew’s style. If this handsome ragamuffin takes it as an opportunity to get blown in the back room, that’s his own business.

Eddie’s head shot up at the sight of Buck, frozen halfway towards his seat. “Buck?”
Buck let out an awkward chuckle and glanced around. “There must be a mix-up, I’ll go ask—”
“No!” Eddie practically yelled the word, and then he winced at the desperation in his own voice. Belatedly, he realized it was possible that people who were interested in men were supposed to be sitting there. But Buck was watching him with wide eyes, still paused leaning on his chair, so Eddie added, “I could use a six-minute break. You know, from finding out how many siblings every woman in this bar has.”
Buck’s eyes glinted in the dim bar lighting. He finally took the seat and asked, “oh, so you don’t care about how many siblings I have?”

Eddie and Buck finally go on a date. It just takes them three times to realize it.

“Hey,” Ilya’s voice, deep and rough, resonates through Shane all the way down to the bottoms of his feet.
He turns his head toward the sound, but doesn’t open his eyes, instead opting just to keep the blissed-out look on his face as he waits to hear what Ilya’s going to say.
Shane imagines it’ll be something like, ‘You are perfect. Such a good boy.’
Or maybe in Russian, ‘I love you so much.’
But much more likely, ‘I give you ten minutes, and then I blow you in the shower.’
Fingers brush against his cheek, and Shane leans into the touch, lost in the feeling of being loved and wanted so wholly. And then, “Would you still love me if I was a worm?”
His eyes open, and he wonders if his dopamine-addled brain has just misheard. “I’m sorry. What?”

"No," Shane barks. Ilya raises his eyebrows.
Shane refuses to accept this. This perpetual cycle of suck. When he invited Ilya to his cottage almost four years ago now, he didn't expect their relationship to turn into their fucking burial ground.
Shane finds himself grounded in Ottawa for the foreseeable future. With his newfound free time, he hangs out with his family, eats Costco Rotisserie chicken, and whips Ilya Rozanov back into a champion.
