Summary
“I have loved you,” Buck said, “across fires, floods, earthquakes, mistaken identities, one brief period where everyone believed I was a secret prince, and the unfortunate week when you were cursed by a jealous botanist.”
Eddie’s mind snagged. “A what?”
“But even if all that vanished,” Buck continued fiercely, “even if every memory burned away, I would love you still. In this life. In the next. In whatever strange world dares to separate us and call itself real.”

“I have no idea what’s going on.” He was embarrassed at the whiny note in his voice, but he couldn’t swallow it away. “I mean, the last thing I remember, I was telling my parents that I was leaving Texas. And then all of the sudden I wake up and it’s like—”
Like some stranger named Buck had infiltrated every corner of his life. That’s what it felt like.

Amnesiac Eddie tries really hard to hate Buck. It doesn’t stick.

Summary
This is all perfectly applicable to friendship. Friendships require effort. Intentionality. Sometimes you have to watch a minute long Instagram video about attracting men to figure out how to get your male best friend to come back to your house and fall asleep on your couch again. Or in your bed. Either one.
Whatever Buck's comfortable with. Eddie's not picky.
Eddie will take whatever proximity Buck is willing to offer and be grateful for it, and if that sounds desperate then fine, it's a little desperate, but it's friend-desperate, which is a completely different thing than regular desperate.
He replays the video and takes mental notes, formulating a plan that is simple: get Buck's attention. Spend more time with Buck. Stop feeling like his ribcage has been hollowed out with a melon baller every time he goes forty-eight hours without hearing Buck laugh.
Easy and straightforward. He’s got this.
Or,
Five times Eddie tries to show Buck how much he misses him; plus the one time he just says it.Series

Summary
Eddie realized dimly that his hand was still lifted, phone pressed to his ear, the call still live – Buck’s voice spilling through the speaker, thin and panicked and far too loud:
“…Eddie, what is happening? Talk to me. Eddie.”
He should have kissed him before leaving the house, Eddie thought, as his knees gave out.
He should have kissed him more, period. Every chance he got. In the kitchen, from behind, hands wrapped around his waist. On the couch, during the quiet lull of a movie neither of them was watching. In the parking lot before a shift, just because he could. In the locker room as the bells went off – a good luck charm tucked just out of sight.
He should have stopped acting like there’d always be another time.
Or,
Eddie gets shot. Again.

Summary
The LAFD tasks the 118 with hosting community game nights, and Eddie shows up to every one with a different woman on his arm.
Buck doesn't care. He's not going to care. It's certainly not going to drive him to the edge of insanity.

Summary
"Leave it," Eddie says, his voice pulled taut like a wire about to snap, tight enough to hum.
Buck looks at him, and Eddie’s whole body has gone so rigid he looks carved from stone, but Buck will ruminate on that later. But he can't exactly leave his phone under the seat for the next eight hundred miles, it's got his whole life on it, every stupid photo he's ever taken of Christopher and Eddie and Eddie and Christopher and, embarrassingly, just Eddie, so many just-Eddies, an entire hidden album of candids he'll never admit to because they constitute evidence of something he's been pretending he doesn't feel.
"I can't leave it, it's my phone. It's got— hold on, I think it slid under your seat."
“Buck, don’t.”
It’s as if Eddie doesn’t even know him, because Buck has never once heard the word don’t and responded with anything resembling obedience. So now he’s stretching across the center console with one hand braced on Eddie’s thigh for leverage, the other reaching blindly into the dark gap beneath the driver’s seat, and he’s aware on some level that his positioning is— that he’s essentially— that his head is—
He’s in Eddie’s lap.

“Eddie,” Maddie says. “I know our kids are different ages, and our situations are different, but — it kind of sounds like you need something else besides your kid and work, too.”
Well, I used to have a best friend, Eddie thinks, then pushes the thought away. “I … I have other things. But Chris and the job are definitely the most central right now.”
"You know, you can’t put yourself last all the time, Eddie.” She laughs a little. “Straight from my therapist’s mouth to your ears! Ooh — you know what? I’ve got a great idea.”
“Oh?”
“You should come to book club. It’s something I do with my parent friends. We take turns hosting, and it’s my turn!”

Eddie tried to figure out how to explain. “My, uh, apartment walls are pretty thin.”
“Mhm,” she said.
“So, I can, you know. Hear things. Coming from the other side of the wall. Which, like, I guess is his bedroom.” Eddie’s face was on fire. “So, the second time it happened, I thought, I’ll just wait until he opens the door so I can introduce myself and ask him to keep it down.”
“But then you saw him,” she finished.
“But then I saw him.”

“You okay?” Buck asks gently, a curious concern clear on his face.
“Mhm,” Eddie replies around a mouthful of beer and then gulps it down loudly, unnaturally.
“You sure? You seem… tense,” Buck says, lifting a wet hand out of the water and gesturing his fingers up and down in Eddie’s direction.
“I’m fine, just tired and sore,” Eddie answers, but he knows it sounds weak to Buck, who knows him too well.
He knows what Eddie is like at his most tired after a shift, has known him through the exhaustion of recovering from a bullet wound and can easily recognize when he’s not telling him everything. The thing about Buck is that he is persistent and sometimes he does it loudly, passionately pestering until he can help. Other times he persists quietly, steps in and knows just what Eddie needs.

Summary
Christopher starts shaking more violently then. “Buck jumped back in the water for me.”
There’s a protocol for a lot of scenarios, both in the Army and as an EMT. Eddie is used to knowing what to do, and how to do it; who to help, and where. Yet now, hopelessness splits through him like a bullet. Eddie doesn’t know what else to do other than hold his kid tighter and press his lips to his temple.
“Is that– Christopher?” Hen asks over his shoulder. The tiny pocket of universe that he’s created with just him, his son, and Buck’s name battering in his chest unravels.
Still keeping Christopher in his arms, Eddie rises to his feet. “I made Buck watch him for the day to get him out of the house. He– he brought him to the pier.”
“Where is he, Eddie?” Bobby asks carefully.
There’s a protocol for a lot of scenarios, both in the Army and as an EMT, but not for this.

See! All of that was normal. Expected. Unremarkable in the day in the life of two best friends whose favorite kid in the whole wide world was coming back!
Except Eddie was still smiling at his phone dazedly like the Cheshire Cat, so lost in joy, Joy, JOY, that the next thing Buck knew, Eddie was leaning in to kiss him briskly on the lips with an, "Alright, Baby. Just lock up."
Buck froze. Dumbstruck as he stared after Eddie, who was distractedly rushing out the door.
"I'm sure Frank will set me straight. I'll be sure to let you know if I have any big revelations."
Or, Eddie has no idea he's shown his cards and Buck makes it his mission to get Eddie to allow himself to be happy.

“Maybe not on purpose,” Chim chimes in, “but, see, the thing is, when you flirt with our Buck, his brain turns off. He just bluescreens.”
“You’re flustering the poor boy, Eddie,” Hen adds. “And it’s making him dumb.”

"Buck, quit flirting and get back to work," Chimney calls from across the bay. Buck makes a face, ready to argue that he was in fact working and Eddie had been the one to walk up and distract him, but something about the way Chimney says 'flirting' digs its claws into him. He wasn't flirting. He doesn't flirt with Eddie. He knows he doesn't flirt with Eddie because he has spent the last several months getting over Eddie. He doesn't like Eddie anymore and he would never do anything to make Eddie uncomfortable or do anything to jeopardize their friendship like that. But by the time he makes his way to the other end of that thought spiral, Chim has disappeared around the engine and Eddie is in the back of the ambulance.
"I wasn't flirting." Buck says, to no one but himself.
